DESCRIPTION

3 SYSTEM DISCRIPTION
Atomizing air systems provide sufficient pressure in the air atomizing chamber of the fuel
nozzle body to maintain the ratio of atomizing air pressure to compressor discharge pres-
sure at approximately 1,2 or greater over the full operating range of the turbine. Since the
output of the main atomizing air compressor, driven by the accessory gear, is low at tur-
bine firing speed, a starting atomizing air compressor provides a similar pressure ratio
during the firing and warm-up period of the starting cycle, and during a portion of the ac-
celerating cycle. Continuous blow down to atmosphere is also provided to clear the main
gas turbine compressor of accumulated dirt.
Major system components include: the main atomizing air compressor, starting atomizing
air compressor and atomizing air heat exchanger. See schematic Atomizing Air System.

4 SYSTEM COMPONENTS DESCRIPTION

Caution
At the conclusion of water wash, drain water from the atomizing air piping by open-
ing the low point drain valves. When all the water has drained from the piping, the
drain valves and vent valve must be closed and the isolation valve opened.

4.1 MAIN ATOMIZING AIR COMPRESSOR

When the turbine is at approximately 55% speed, the output of the main atomizing air
compressor provides sufficient air for liquid fuel atomization and combustion. The main
atomizing air compressor is a centrifugal compressor which is driven through its own
gearbox by the accessory gear of the turbine. The compressor gearbox contains two heli-
cal gears which increase the compressor speed and reduce the aerodynamic thrust on
the bearings. The larger gear is driven through a splint coupling from the accessory gear,
and the smaller gear drives the main atomizing air compressor impeller. The bearings for
the two main compressor shafts are oil lubricated, pivot shoe bearings made from babbit-
faced steel. An air eductor is mounted on the accessory gearbox to prevent the main at-
omizing air compressor and the accessory gearboxes from becoming pressurized with air
that passes the main compressor seals.

Note

i Care must be taken to keep the main atomizing air piping free from loose objects.
Any large objects hitting the high speed compressor impeller will lead to a severe
unbalance of the impeller shaft and overloading of the bearing.

4.2 STARTING (BOOSTER) ATOMIZING AIR

Starting atomizing air compressor CA2 is a compact, rotary-lobe type axial flow compres-
sor. The meshing of two screw type rotors provides controlled compression of the air for
maximum efficiency and pulsation-free discharge.
Two heavy-duty angular-contact ball bearings are used on each rotor shaft, at the dis-
charge end, as fixed bearings to maintain discharge end clearance. The housing is a one-
piece casting with flanged inlet and discharge openings. The rotors are ductile iron with
integral shaft. All rotors are dynamically balanced for vibration-free operation. Helical tim-
ing gears are of allow steel with hardened and ground teeth for quiet operation.
Standard construction is top inlet, bottom discharge, with drive shaft extension from main
rotor at the inlet end. Rotation is counterclockwise viewing the drive shaft. The compres-
sor is diesel motor driven. The speed of the main rotor is twice that of the gate rotor.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
DESCRIPTION

A new compressor must be checked and serviced before operating. The compressor
must be lubricated and operated according to the following instructions. Compressor fail-
ure can be caused by operation at above rated pressure or below rated minimum speed.
Both cause excessive discharge temperature and seizure of rotating parts.
Compression is effected by the main (2 lobe) and gate (4 flute) rotor meshing enclosed in
the housing. The timing gears maintain close rotor clearance. The rotors do not touch
each other, the housing, or the bearing carriers. Although clearances are small, lubrica-
tion in the compression chamber is not required, insuring oil-free air delivery.
The compression cycle begins as the rotors un mesh at the inlet port. Air is drawn into the
rotor cavities, trapped and compressed by the reducing cavities as rotation continues.
When proper compression is made, the cavities cross the discharge port completing the
cycle. The cycle occurs twice each revolution and is continuous.
Compressor discharge temperature will vary with operating conditions.
If extreme heating occurs, stop the compressor immediately and correct the trouble. Do
not continue to run a compressor that is overheating. Check compressor for damage be-
fore restarting.
Lubricating oil temperature will increase with increasing discharge air temperature, oil
sump temperatures at the discharge end in the 93-107°C range are not uncommon.
