Welcome to this section on Meaning and Spirituality!
How do you understand the ultimate purpose of your earthly existence?
Ancient philosophy says that goodness, beauty and truth are all routes towards meaning. In this section you will find theories and research about “meaning in life” and you will be introduced to coping strategies for meaningful living. We will see how for some people spirituality, or a belief system that goes beyond their own self-interest, offers the ultimate path towards meaning. On our path to existential well-being we do not give a specific label to the ultimate to which individuals feel connected. We welcome any authentic experience, regardless of the names that specific cultures assign to it. When we describe you as ‘spiritual being’ we are referring to your capacity to stay true to yourself and your ability to contact the best in yourself. Spiritual development is then approached as a cleansing process where you gradually root out the obstacles that keep you from your essence. In this section you will also discover some virtues to deepen meaning and spirituality. We start with “love”, the meaning-giving virtue par excellence. Further on we will reflect upon the “sense of wonder” or your ability to let yourself experience “awe”. We also celebrate: “being idle”, a well-being attitude that is needed to balance your system. Forms of meditation can be disciplined ways of doing nothing and discovering inner joy. Your life can become meaningless because of the fact that things didn’t go as you planned. The virtue of “un-knowing” can help you when you come up against that which is bigger than you. And do not forget “humor” as a spiritual response to existential challenges. Humor allows you to put your limitations into perspective and overcome them. Your awareness of the many ways in which the spirit flows through human existence will be increased by participating in our interaction forums. Such an authentic interaction is in itself a meaningful process.
