Welcome!
I'm so glad you are reading this book - and I'll tell you why.

Essential oils are becoming a common household item. Just about

everyone I run into has heard about essential oils. When I tell
people what I do, they nod and get excited.

But how to safely use them? Most people don't have a clue. They
will tell me how they love rubbing them on their feet to prevent a
cold, or add drops to their water to detox.

Nearly every user - we're talking more than a million - has used
essential oils unsafely. Many have experienced at least one
adverse reaction from the unsafe use of essential oils. It can
happen to anyone, at any time. Redness, irritation, burning,
coughing, headaches, or even more serious problems like ulcers
and kidney or liver issues.

If you are reading this book before

you've harmed yourself (or a loved one)
- hooray! But if an adverse reaction is
what lead you to this book, feel free to
release the guilt. Today is a new day!
Learn from the information in this book
how to safely use essential oils so they
can bring you many years of safe and
effective use.

Safety First!
Before you dive into the profiles pages, please read this page in
full. I don't want any misunderstandings when you read the
information that follows.

The COMMON NAME of the essential oil is located on the side(s) of

the profiles pages. The CHEMOTYPE, if applicable, will run across
the top the page, followed by the LATIN/BOTANICAL name. As you
will find, some essential oils have more than one species, so it is
important to note the chemotype and botanical name when
looking for safety information. In this same area you will find
information for the plant part used, and the method used to
extract the essential oil. Shelf life info can be found here as well.

SAFETY INFORMATION is listed on the first profile page. It is

important that you understand this area, so as not to misuse the
essential oil:

If "YES" is indicated under "Safe for which AGES" the maximum

topical dilution guideline must be respected, if applicable, and if
there is no topical max, you still must always dilute before
applying topically (more info in the Appendix on diluting).
Common sense safety information is still applicable, such as
diffusing for short intervals, and not ingesting. Although there is
technically no minimum age requirement, it is still recommended
that topical use be avoided until age two, and exposure to
inhalation be avoided until six months (see Appendix on Children).
If "YES" is indicated under "Safe for PREGNANCY" or "Safe for
BREASTFEEDING," the maximum topical dilution guideline must be
respected, if applicable, and if there is no topical max, you still
must always dilute before applying topically (more info in the
Appendix on Pregnancy). Common sense safety information is still
applicable, such as diffusing for short intervals, and not ingesting
(see Appendixes).

If "YES" is indicated under "Safe for DOGS" or "Safe for CATS"

then pet-specific guidelines, different than the guidelines for
humans, must be adhered to (more info in the Appendix on Pets).

"MAX TOPICAL DILUTION" is noted where applicable, and based

off the information from Essential Oil Safety by Tisserand & Young.
This is for topical usage only. The amount listed should be
respected, or you risk adverse reactions (phototoxicity, irritation,
redness, burning, sensitization, etc.). If there is NO topical max
listed, general dilution guidelines must be followed (see Appendix
for more info).

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES have been attributed to essential oils

Children and
Essential Oils
This appendix will teach you...
what age to begin DIFFUSING
what age to use TOPICALLY
a list of essential oils to AVOID
a list of essential oils SAFE to use
C
First things first - AGES
Essential oils should be used with caution and intent. It
is not recommended that essential oils be used with

H
babies before the age of six months due to their
thinner skin and immature immune systems.
After the age of six months, you may diffuse child safe

I
essential oils for a specific purpose and short periods
of time. For an acute case (like a bee sting or bug
bite), you may use essential oils topically, but this
should be the exception and not the norm. Children

L
are particularly sensitive to aroma and products
applied to the skin.
After the age of 2 years you may start topical use with

D
a very low dilution (less than 1%), but keep in mind a
child's immune system takes several years to fully
develop, making them less able to deal with the
adverse affects which may arise when concentrated

R
products are used improperly on or around them.
Herbs and hydrosols are often a better and safer
choice for children.

E
After the age of 6 years the immune system has likely
matured, and adverse reactions from low dilutions of
essential oils are not as likely. You'll still want to use
low dilutions (usually 1%), but thicker skin is going to

N
provide more protection from topical applications.

EOprofilesBOOK.com, UsingEOsSafely.com, (c) Lea Jacobson 2017

C
Essential oils to AVOID with children
There are essential oils which should be avoided with
children - either just inhaling, just topically, or both

H
(referred to below as "all routes") - due to various
reasons noted below.
Some essential oils have several different species or

I
chemotypes - some are safe for children, and some
are not. Please take note of the species or
chemotype noted to lessen confusion with other
essential oils with the same name (compiled from the

L
list of essential oils in this book):
Please refer to the profiles for more information.
Cardamom Elettaria cardamomum - under age 10

D
years avoid all routes based on high 1,8-cineole
content
Cassia Cinnamomum cassia, Cinnamomum
aromaticum - under age 2 years avoid topical use
based on cinnamaldehyde content
Clove Eugenia caryophyllata, Syzygium
aromaticum, Eugenia aromatica - under age 2 years R
E
avoid topical use based on eugenol content
Eucalyptus Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus radiata,
Eucalyptus smithii, etc. - under age 10 years avoid
all routes based on high 1,8-cineole content

N
Lemongrass Cymbopogon flexuosus, Andropogon
flexuosus (East Indian); Cymbopogon citratus,
Andropogon citratus (West Indian) - under age 2
years avoid topical use based on citral content
