SCOPE ‘This specification covers the minimum requirements for materials, manufacture, inspection and testing of U-tubes required for installation in shell and tube heat exchangers. CODES AND SPECIFICATIONS (Latest editions) ASME Section II Part A & B ASME Section VIII Division 1 TEMA IBR, if applicable EIL Specification # 6-15-0001 MATERIAL ‘Tubes required for the manufacture of the U-bends shall meet all the requirements of EIL Specification # 6-15-0001 and the Codes mentioned above. ‘Tube thickness specified in the datasheets and/or drawings are minimum before forming, Unstabilized austenitic SS (type 304, 316 etc.) shall not be used. Wherever these are specified, only low carbon grades type 304L, 316L or stabilised grades type 321 or 347, which has been given a separate stabilization heat treatment in addition to solution heat treatment shall be used. MANUFACTURE All U-tubes shall be formed from a continuous length of tubing, free of girth welds. ‘The minimum mean radius of U-bends of tubes shall be 2 times the OD of the tube, unless specified otherwise. U-tubes shall be manufactured only from seamless tubes. Welded tubes shall not be used. All U-bends shall be cold formed. Thinning ‘Thinning of tubes after bending shall be as per TEMA. One tube for each material and size shall be bent to the specified minimum radius and cross sectional thickness measured at 4 points i.e. 0°, 30°, 60° & 90° from tangent line of U-bend, Flattening Flattening after bending shall be within the range given below unless approved otherwise: Minimum radius of bend Flattening Upto2 0D + 10% greater than 2 OD £ 5% Flattening shall be calculated as below: % Flattening = MD -OD x 100 oD Format No, 6-00-0001-F1 Rev. 0 Copyright EIL — Alighis reserved STANDARD SPECIFICATION SSHRZE A) ENGINEERS STANDARD SPECFICATION i ssaneee © ROALD FOR ae U-TUBES Page 5 of 6 47 48 49 5.0 5. 52 53 54 55 5.6 57 5.8 Centre to centre distance Centre to centre distance shall be measured at the tangent line of the U bend and shall have the following tolerances: Bend Radius Tolerance (mm) R<5x0D £10 R 25xOD £15 ‘The bent portion shall be substantially uniform in curvature and shall not exceed + 1.5 mm of nominal centre line radius. Permissible deviation from the plane of bend shall not exceed 1.5 mm as measured from the point of tangency. HEAT TREATMENT All Carbon Steel, Killed Carbon Steel, Low Temperature Carbon Steel, 3% % Ni, Carbon- moly & Low Alloy Steel U-tubes up to 5 times tube OD bend radius shall be stress relieved after bending over U-tube plus 300 mm (min) beyond the point of tangency. All SS (300 series) and Incoloy U-tubes where bend radius is less than 5 times the tube OD shall be solution annealed after bending over their full length, except that partial length of U- bend plus 300mm (minimum) beyond the point of tangency can be post bend stress relieved if the SS is of stabilized heat treated (stabilized) grades, such as SS 321, SS 347, SS 316 Ti. In case, vendor wants to avoid full length annealing he should use SS 321 wherever $8304 or 'SS304L is specified and SS 316Ti wherever SS 316 or SS 3161 is specified. All non-ferrous U-tubes, ¢.g. cupro nickel, monel, admiralty brass, aluminium brass, irrespective of bend radii, shall be stress relief annealed after bending over the U-bend portion plus 300mm on each straight length. Heat treatment of titanium, nickel and high nickel alloys U-tubes shall be done only if specified in datasheets and/or drawings. For Duplex and Super Duplex SS tubes heat treatment is not recommended and shall be done only if specified in the data sheets and/or drawings. Stress relieving of ferritic and martensitic SS (400 series) U-tubes shall be done only if specified in datasheet and/or drawings. If stress relief is specified, stress relieving shall be applied on the U-bend plus 300 mm (minimum) by furnace heat treatment only. Tube bending lubricants, oil, grease, etc., shall be removed from U-bends before stress relieving. Internal surfaces of SS (300 series) tubes shall be checked for cleanliness by blowing close fitting acetone soaked felt plugs. Dry, oil free air or nitrogen shall be used for blowing the plugs. If plugs show more than a light gray discoloration, the tubes shall be recleaned and retested. ‘Temperature control during heat treatment shall be accomplished through the use of optical or emission pyrometers or both. No temperature indicating crayons, lacquers or pellets shall, be used, Format No, 6-00-0001-F1 Rev. 0 ‘Copyright EIL ~Allrights reserved STANDARD SPECIFICATION SM ZTE SS ENGNERS, STANDARD SPECFICATION ie INDIA LIMITED FOR 6-16-0008 Rev.3. Close control of tube temperature is required during heat treatment. Measure the controlling temperature with a thermocouple or calibrated optical pyrometer on the straight tangent near a U-bend. Do not deviate the heat treatment temperatures specified in Code by +15°C. By furnace U-Tubes shall be properly supported above the furnace floor. Establish a procedure on lines similar to Cl. 5.9.1.2. Proposed procedure shall be submitted to the AI and approval obtained prior to actual heat treatment. Heat treatment temperatures by furnace and/or electric resistance methods shall be as given in the respective product specification or in the Code, subject to a maximum variation of 15°C. The stress relief heat treatment temperature shall be at least 25°C below the minimum tempering temperature used for the original material. In the case of duplex SS, cooling after the solution annealing shall be carried out by using forced air, inert gas blast or water quenching, All SS U-Tubes after heat treatment shall be pickled and passivated as per ASTM A380 employing a previously qualified procedure acceptable to Purchaser/ EIL. INSPECTION & TESTING All U-bends shall be visually inspected to detect any harmful effect. All the U-bends with bend radii less than 5 times the tube OD shall be inspected for thinning, flattening, centre to centre distance, bend curvature and for the deviation from the plane of bend, to ensure conformance to the limits specified. U-bends with bend radii greater than 5 times the tube OD shall be inspected randomly at the discretion of the AI, subject to a minimum 1 tube per one bend radius batch For SS 300 series tubes, IGC corrosion test shall be carried out as per ASTM A262 practice-E, unless waived otherwise, after final heat treatment. Specimen, after exposure to the IGC environment shall be bent as per A262 practice-E and shall be inspected under a magnification of 200x. The bent specimen shall be free of any cracks or grain dropping. ‘The microstructure shall be submitted to Purchaser/EIL and/or AI for approval. All tubes after U-bending, heat treatment, cleaning, etc. shall be hydrostatically tested to 70 kgicm’g or tube side test pressure, whichever is greater, prior to assembling the tube bundle. Minimum holding time shall be 2 minutes. Hydro test reports shall be submitted. Format No, 6-00-0001-F1 Rev. 0 Copyright EL Al rights reserved
