CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

There is no backstairs that a modern day teenager’s life is built around the usage of

technology. As a result of society’s heavy reliance on technology, Social media has become

popular amongst people who are “technologically advanced”. Though there is a wide variety of

social sites that can be accessed through modern day technology, a few have become very

popular. Social sites which become widely popular among teens (e.g. Instagram, Tumblr,

Facebook, Snap chat) and so on.

These social networking sites provide instant social connection and emotional support

while allowing teens post and send pictures of their everyday living. Many teens look towards

social media for emotional support and social acceptance.

 Social media nowadays is very advantageous yet very disadvantageous to everyone

especially on students. However, through social media everyone can increment more

information, knowledge, and a new idea on a certain thing.

It is defined as an interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation

and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expressions via virtual

communities and networks.

The researchers conducted this research to know the insights of the students mainly on

ADSCO SHS, and also to gather information mainly to the students about the advantages and

disadvantages of using too much social media along with the study.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Through this following question, researchers may able to determine student’s insights:

1. Do you in yourself can say that, you are influenced by social media? In what way?

2. Did we gain more knowledge and ideas in social media?

3. Do social media gives you further information about your research?

4. Did you use social media only in important matter? In what way?
 5. Do you think social media is really useful to us? Why or why not?

6. What are the advantages and disadvantages of social media?

7. Does social media affects your daily living as a student?

8. As individual, Does social media is truly leverage in our society nowadays?

1.3 Significance of the Study

The researchers conducted this research to know more about the advantages and

disadvantages of using social media, through asking related questions to students. Students

should know that social media has lots of negative effects. Even though, social media brings

entertainment it does not guarantee that it will not have a bad effects.

This study will provide some outcomes if the use of social media will be lessen the

followings are:

Students. The outcome of this study will help the students to be more focused to their

studies and they can limit their usage because they will be aware of the negative results in using

too much social sites.

Parents. The outcome of this study will help the parents, because they will not be worried

about their children’s health, and worried about their children with regards to school matter.

School. The outcome of this study will help the school in terms of the students studies
because, the students will be more focused and productive in class.

1.4 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research will be conducted in Agusan del Sur College Inc., the participants will

be the Senior High students.

The primary purpose of this research is to know their insights about social media

and to inform them the advantage of social media especially, the disadvantages of it.

1.5 Definition of Terms

Leverage- influence or power used to achieve a desired result.

Backstairs- done in a secret and usually improper way.

Increment- a usually small amount by which something is made larger.

Disadvantageous- causing someone to have a disadvantage.

Teenagers- relating to people who are between 13 and 19 years old.

Century- a period of 100 years counted from the beginning of the Christian era.

REVIEW ON RELATED LITERATURE

A. CONCEPTUAL LITERATURE
Social media nowadays has always been a reliable source for the many
especially on students. May it be for communication, enjoyment, and research,
but it only boils down that social media usage is for entertainment. Billed as the
powerful way of communication, media has its own advantage and
disadvantages. And it helped to make working of a nation extremely transparent.
Many people across the UK are beginning to rely on technology throughout
their day, to the point it can be the depicted as a digital limb for some users. We
can’t leave a room without putting our phones in our pockets, many of us even
rely on them to wake us up to start our day. Social media plays a huge part on how
people interact with each other in the modern day and although this increase in
communication for young people can be a good thing, it doesn’t come without its

On academic level, social media can have a negative effect on students

productivity when it comes to concentration in the classroom, timekeeping, and
conscientiousness. It is important to discuss ways to combat these factors without
heralding new media as a social societal crime which many previous attempts of
raising awareness on this issue have tended to do. It is without a doubt that
platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have introduced many
beneficial aspects to modern day society and its users. For one it has made young
people more politically aware, making them more likely to vote, and has also
helped them communicate with other young people on a wider scale than ever
before.

However, other issues such as having damaging effects on self-image and

mental health, productivity in school, and issues with privacy and data protection
are all attributes that students need to be educated on.
