Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Ramadan was the month in which the first
verses of the Qur'an were said to be revealed to the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. That was during a
night that Muslims call Lailatul al-Qadr. The night is believed to be one of the 10 last days of the
month. Ramadan ends with Eidul-Fitri on the first of Syawal, with much celebration and feasting.
Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking
and sexual relations from dawn until sunset. Fasting is meant to teach the Muslim patience, modesty
and spirituality. Fasting also gives many benefits to us. There are three benefits of fasting that I
would like to share in this essay.

First of all, the first benefit of fasting detoxification is. Ramadan acts as a fantastic detox for your
body. By not eating or drinking throughout the day your body will be offered the rare chance to
detoxify your digestive system throughout the month. Abstaining from eating and drinking enhances
the metabolic process of the body. When your body starts eating into fat reserves to create energy,
it will also burn away any harmful toxins that might be present in fat deposits. This body cleanses
will leave a healthy blank slate behind, and is the perfect stepping stone to a consistently healthy
lifestyle. This is done by naturally expelling body toxins and systematically reducing the rate of food
consumption. So it’s not about how much you eat and store, it’s the patience and perseverance that
keeps the body in shape.

Furthermore, the second benefits of fasting are boosting your brain. No doubt you’ll be aware of
the positive effects of fasting that can have on your mental wellbeing and spiritual focus, but the
brain-boosting powers of Ramadan are even more significant than you might think. A study carried
out by scientists found that the mental focus achieved during Ramadan increases the level of brain-
derived neurotropic factor, which causes the body to produce more brain cells, thus improving brain
function. Likewise, a distinct reduction in the amount of the hormone cortisol, produced by the
adrenal gland, means that stress levels are greatly reduced both during and after Ramadan. In a
nutshell, Ramadan makes our brain become more productive and make our mind calm and relieve.

Last but not least, the third benefits of fasting is ditching bad habits such as smoking. Ramadan is
the perfect time to ditch your bad habits for good. Vices such as smoking and sugary foods should
not be indulged during Ramadan, and as you abstain from them your body will gradually acclimatise
to their absence until your addiction is kicked for good. It’s also much easier to quit bad habits when
you do so in a group, which should be easy to find during Ramadan. Fasting is a ability to help you
cut out bad habits and it is so significant that the expert recommends it as the ideal time to ditch
smoking.

Thus Ramadan give us many benefits whether in physical or emotions. Plus, fasting is a special act
of worship which is only between humans and God since no one else knows for sure if this person is
fasting. Allah said in a hadith: "Fasting is for Me and I only will reward it". In another hadith, the
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) says in a hadith that: "If one does not give up falsehoods
in words and actions, God does not need him giving up food and drink". This mean that we have to
do it sincerely for allah.
