Question 1 is compulsory.

Question 1

(a) “State-centred classifications of the global system based on income, trade, resources,
quality of life and socio-economic blocs, although generates a wealth of data, result in
conceptual confusion and general inconclusiveness in understanding the global system.”

Critically analyse the above statement with reference to the Marxist Sociologist
Leslie Sklair’s theory of the global system.

(b) “Held et al. (1999) argue that it is possible to distinguish between three broad schools of
thought in the conceptualization of globalization.

Outline the main features of the three tendencies in the conceptualization of


globalization.

(a) By giving suitable examples, what do you understand by the term Cultural
Globalization.

(b) Critically examine the sociological significance of the three perspectives on global
flows of culture, namely differentialism, hybridization and convergence in
understanding contemporary cultural globalization.

Question 4

(a) Explain the origin and meaning of neoliberalism.

(b) By giving suitable examples, examine the role of the International Monetary
Fund and the World Bank in the global spread of neoliberalism.

(c) Analyse how the basic principles of neoliberalism have been applied to the
Mauritian economy during the last decade.
