Week of January 17, 2011

a weekly publication for the Williams School community

Dear Williams School Families,

This coming Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We honor this day not as a day “off” but a day to
remember others who are struggling in some way and to serve others in some way.

During assembly on Wednesday, The Honor Council, made up of students from grades 6-8, stood up in front of
the school and presented what they thought we should remember next Monday. Each Honor Council member
took a step forward and quoted from Dr. King.

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up,
live out the true meaning of its creed -
we hold these truths to be self-evident,
that all men are created equal."

"If we are to go forward, we must go back and rediscover those precious values - that all reality hinges on moral
foundations and that all reality has spiritual control."

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

"I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

"Nothing pains some people more than having to think."

"We who in engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface
the hidden tension that is already alive."

"Life's most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?"

"The ultimate measure of a [person] is not where he [or she] stands in moments of comfort and convenience,
but where he [or she] stands at times of challenge and controversy."

The Honor Council finished by telling the gathering that ultimately Dr. King’s words illustrate all of our values
and our common belief in doing the right thing especially when no one is looking.

Best,

Jay

and a sentiment from the donor. An example is pictured on the school’s website,

Best of Live!
An exciting part of The Williams School annual auction is the opportunity for one lucky winner to select, at the
beginning of the Live Auction, his or her favorite Live Auction item. That item will then become the exclusive
property of the Best of Live! winner. How wonderful is that?
Only 50 will be offered for sale, at the tempting price of $150 per ticket. Limited to one per family, the Best of
Live! tickets will go on sale starting Friday, January 21 st and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The
tickets can be purchased through the school’s website, www.thewilliamsschool.org, or by contacting Jennifer
Cahoon at jcahoon@thewilliamsschool.org. The drawing will take place at the start of the Live Auction on
Saturday, February 26, 2011, and you must be present to win. Good Luck!

our TWS families present. These baskets, which you can arrange on your own or with friends, are in lieu of the
classroom baskets of past auctions. Check out the list of themes on the google docs site that has been sent to
you and either claim one or add your own to it. For more information, take a look at the recent email detailing
due dates and more. Feel free to email any questions you may have to Kim Hardy
