Subject New Cummins Prelub for K19,
K38/50, and V28
Construction Engines

Date September, 1993 Page 1 of 12 AEB Number 40.12

The Cummins Prelub system is designed to prelubricate the engine before starting. Benefits of using Prelub are:

• Reduced wear of pressure lubricated friction surfaces.

• Reduced risk of starting the engine without lubricant in the sump.

• Lube filters will be full of lubricant before the engine can be started after servicing.

• Reduced risk of engine damage due to rapid acceleration from start to rated speed.

• Satisfies the prelublication requirement on some KV installations equipped with remote lube oil filters.

Prelub will be available from the factory starting in the fourth quarter of 1993. These systems will also be available
from Cummins distributors in new and Recon versions.

The Prelub system will initially be offered in two models.

• Starter mounted - This system incorporates the Prelub pump on the rear of a Delco Remy 50 MT starter.
(Reference Attachment II)

• Remote (Bracket) mounted - This version uses the same pump as above except it has a self contained electric
motor. (Reference Attachment IX)

Prelub System Operation

The Prelub system is activated when the operator turns the key switch to the start position. With the key in the start
position, the standard starter solenoid circuit is bypassed by means of a solenoid timer. This allows the starter motor
(self contained electric motor on remote units) to drive the Prelub pump. Once the engine lubrication system is
pressurized to a predetermined value, a normally closed pressure switch will open and after a three second delay
will allow the standard starter solenoid to engage and a normal start will occur.

Installation Information

Prelub starters:

• A 50MT Prelub starter will be used in place of a single starter.

• Engines requiring dual starters will use the Prelub starter in place of the lower starter, the upper starter will
not change. Dual starter applications require two starter relays to prevent both starters from engaging
during the Prelub cycle.

Caution - Conventional dual starter applications should have two starter relays. However, if a Prelub
system is being installed on a machine with dual starters and the unit only has one starter relay,
a second starter relay must be added to allow the system to function correctly.

Prelub remote:

• K38/50 remote units will be bracket mounted on the cylinder block, either right or left side depending upon
the option selected. The other engine models will offer the remote Prelub as a kit. The kit will include all of
the required hardware for installation including mounting straps, which incorporate a mounting pad,
suitable for off engine mounting.

Caution - Installations requiring 'remote engine mounted' Prelub systems on V28 and K19 model engines
must be approved by Cummins Application Engineering.

Plumbing guidelines:

• Oil suction hose, from the sump to the Prelub pump, will be a #20 hose on K38/50 engines and a #16 hose
for all other engine models. Remote, off engine, mounted Prelub systems must be mounted within 50
inches of the oil pan suction port and no higher than the standard starter location. These limits are required
to prevent excessive suction restriction during cold weather operation.

• Oil supply hose, from the Prelub to the engine supply port, will be a #10 hose on all engine models. A check
valve is required where the oil supply hose is attached to the engine to prevent reverse flow thru the Prelub
system during normal engine operation. (Reference attachment II)

• Acceptable plumbing port locations are as follows:

Oil suction ports:

K38/50 engines have a designated port in the oil pan. All other engine models will use the oil heater port, in the
oil pan.

Caution - Do NOT plumb the oil suction hose to the oil pan drain boss. Pumping oil pan sediment thru the
Prelub pump may cause premature wear or failure.

Oil supply ports:

Oil supply port location varies by engine model, the preferred location is shown on the Prelub "installation guide"
supplied with each kit.

Caution - Make sure the supply port is plumbed to the engine ahead of the lube oil filter(s).

• Solenoid Timer - The solenoid timer should be mounted off engine. The mounting technique should protect
the unit from high frequency vibration and temperatures exceeding 185 degrees F. (Reference Attachment
III)

• Pressure switch - The pressure switch must be located in the lube system after the lube oil filter(s).
(Reference Attachment IV)

• Check valve.

• Pressure switch - K38/50 has a 2.5 psi pressure setting all other engine models use a 4.0 psi pressure
setting.

• Plumbing - Fittings and hoses.

• Wiring harness.
