ASSESSMENT OF CONTRACTIONS

Intended Learning Outcomes:

1. Determine whether a contraction pattern typical of true labor.


2. Identify abnormal contraction that may jeopardize the health of the mother or fetus.
3. Prevent health hazards which mother be exposed.
4. Detect, diagnose & provide proper management of any hazards as early as possible.

Preparation of patient & equipment's


1. Explain procedure to the woman.
2. Ensure woman's bladder is empty.
3. Assemble equipment's:
 Screen
 Wrist watch
 Stethoscope / Doppler
 Put the mother in dorsal recumbent position & screen mother bed.

Accomplish by using the legend according to observed task activity

3 - Yes, needs an improvement
2 - Not done
1 - Not applicable

Procedures:

Steps Rationale 4 3 2 1
1. Ask the woman to tell you when
she first feels a contraction begin
and when it end.
2. Place your hand on her abdomen
to determine:
a. the onset of the
contraction.
b. the duration of the
contraction.
c. the intensity of the
contraction
3. Record the time at the beginning
of each contraction to determine
the frequency.
4. Note the duration of the
contractions in seconds. Also note:
a. the woman’s breathing
pattern during the
contraction.
b. if the woman could be
easily distracted during
the contraction.

5. Press the abdominal wall with


your fingertips during a contraction,
to determine the intensity of the
contraction, and whether it is:
a. mild
b. moderate
c. strong
6. Evaluate the pattern of the labor,
based on the proceeding
information

7. Discuss the findings with the


woman.

8. Document the results
