The students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was set up by

Federal Government of Nigeria to expose student intelligence as regards to

their field and profession. Also it is a program designed for students in

College of Education, Polytechnics and University especially in this period

the country is after technical knowhow.

This report cover the history of place of attachment, work activities,

relationship with the management and stage during industrial attachment,

findings and suggestions about the supervised industrial work experience

scheme and finally summary and conclusion.

BRIEF HISTORY OF SIWES

SIWES means Students’ Industrial work experience scheme.

It is a skill training program designed to expose and prepare students of

universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for the industrial work
situation. They are likely to meet after graduation. It was officially
approved and presented by Federal Government in 1974 and is now
coordinated by ITF along NUC. The program outlined the academic
standards

1
OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

work situation, thereby bridging the gap between theory and

practice.

2. Prepare students for the industrial work situation they are to meet

after graduation.

3. Help students get important contacts for their future jobs.

4. Let students work with real technology and gears that are not

present in their institution.

carried out e.g. Pregnancy test, HIV test, malaria test, blood group

test, typhoid test etc. It is where sample are collected and carried

out.

EXPERIENCED ACQUIRED

During my attachment with the Anointed hospital and maternity ekwulobia

I acquired a lot of experience in laboratory unit. They include;

1. I learnt that before any operation is carried out the surgical

instrument must be sterilized to avoid infection.

2. I learnt about lidocaine. It is an injection given to an injured patient

to reduce pain.

3. I learnt that kidney dish is used to received material both used and

unused one

4. I learnt that artery forceps are used for dressing, stopping bleeding,

picking and compressing

5. I learnt that stethoscope is the instrument you place on the ear and

on the patient’s artery after the sphygmomanometer.

6. I learnt that Gentamycin injection lm or iv is for prevention of

infection and anti-bacteria, ceftriaxone is for the treatment of
abdominal infection after operation, no spa is for the treatment of
painful menstrual flow

5
7. I learnt that bone is the dense connective tissue that forms the

skeleton

HOW TO CHECK A PATIENTS BLOOD PRESSURE

1. Give the patient a sit first

2. Use the sphygmomanometer and tire above the patients’ elbow
3. Place the stethoscope on the patients artery and also on your ear
after the sphygmomanometer
4. Listen attentively to the sound
The normal blood pressure level is B/P = 120/60

Diagram of sphygmomanometer

6
HOW TO CHECK A PATIENT BODY TEMPERATURE

1. Place the thermometer on the patients armpit

2. Make sure the patient hold it tight on his armpit to avoid fallen
3. Leave it there for 60 seconds i.e. 1 minutes
4. Bring it out after 1 minutes and check the body temperature will
display on the thermometer.
5. The temperature is measured in degree Celsius

Thermometer is use to check the amount of hotness or coldness in

the body.

I learnt that the normal body temperature is from 36.5-36.90 c

Experience acquired I learnt about the vital signs and their various
instrument used e.g. thermometer, sphygmomanometer with stethoscope
(use to check blood pressure) etc.

FIRST AID

First aid is the first treatment given to an injured person before the arrival
of the doctor

7
Content in first aid box

1. Plaster
2. Paracetamol
3. Cotton wool
4. Razor
5. Pen
6. Scissors
7. Bandage
8. Methylated spirit

While attending or treating the patient if the person is unconscious don’t

give him or her water

Bone fracture

Bone: This is the dense connective tissue that forms the skeleton. Skeleton
is the frame work of the body and is made up of many bones.

Fracture: this is the breakage in the continuity of the bone

Cause of bone fracture

The fracture of the bone maybe caused by direct or indirect force

Direct force is the force with an object is directly on the bone

Signs and symptoms

i. Pain
ii. Swallowing

8
iii. Deformity
iv. Shortening of the limb
v. Loss of power abnormal mobility (respites)

COLLECTING OF BLOOD SAMPLE

I was taught how to collect blood sample using an instrument called EDTA
bottle which contains anti-cogllant.

LABOUR

I was taught that labour is a patient condition through which the pregnant
woman give birth to a new born baby, usually at completion of 9 months.
I was also taught about the stages of labour which are;

 First stage: this is the longest labour which involves many

sub- stages which one is early (latent) labour phase. In this
stage the body prepares itself for childbirth. The contraction are
15-20 minutes apart and generally mild. The early labour last
for about 8-12 hours. Here you will experience cramps, pain in
the lower back.
 Second stage: At this stage of labour is the time to push the
baby out. The contraction becomes less frequent and your body
is well-lubricated. There may be a discharge of blood and other
fluids. The baby will arrive post this stage. The second stage
labour is longer for first time Mom.
 Third stage of labour: the third stage of labour happen after
child birth. It last for up to 15 minutes. Your breathing will

9
begin to normalize and there will be a lot of bloody discharge.
However, the placenta will still need to be removed.

EXPERIENCE ACQUIRED

I learnt the different between three stages of labour.

SPECIAL PROJECT CARRIED OUT

The special project that I carried out during my industrial training was that
I make sure our office is always clean

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

1. I encountered problem of distance and transportation.

2. It take me time to adapt with the environment in the hospital
3. Time factor

CHAPTER THREE

RELATIONSHIP WITH MANAGEMENT AND STAFF

During my industrial training I had cordial relationship with the

management and staff of Grace Davis Hospital. The co-operation that
existed among us especially the doctors, pharmacist, lab technical and
nurses prompted them to teach me everything. They also allowed me to
carries out some test by myself.

CHAPTER FOUR

FINDINGS AND SUGGESTIONS

FINDINGS

- Most of the companies do not accept students that are seeking for
SIWES placement because of their short period of time or stay.
- I also observed that four months is not enough for students to
practically involve in their course of study and because of the
shortness of the program most companies and organization do not
accept it.
- I found out that there were a lot of problems facing industrial training
student such as securing a place of work because majority of people
found it very difficult to secure a place of work.

SUGGESTIONS

1. I suggest that the ITF official should give more months like six
months for the student so as to achieve more knowledge during the
Industrial in order to achieve the aims and objectives of the industrial
training program.
2. The company should be willing to accept and encourage students
that are seeking for SIWES placement in their company.

12
CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

SUMMARY

My four months industrial attachment at Anointed Hospital and maternity is

located Umuchiana in Ekwulobia was well splendid. The program has given

me the ability to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the school into

practical. It helps me to cope with a normal working condition and has also

exposed and prepared me for future industrial work.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion I am saying that SIWES program should lasted to a period of

six- eight months in order to learn, acquire more practical experience that

will help me as a student and also in life.

My industrial training was very educative and fantastic because the

program exposed me to learn many things.
