Trip circuit supervision
relays
The purpose of this manual is to help users to operate the RelayAux trip circuit
supervision relay.
2. Range
The RelayAux trip circuit breaker supervision relay comprises the following models:
bb Single phase or pole trip circuit to supervise the trip circuit for one trip coil of a circuit
breaker.
bb Three phases or poles trip circuit to supervise the three trip circuits of the circuit
breaker with three coils (one per phase).
The trip circuit wiring is supervised from the positive supply to the negative supply
whilst the circuit breaker is open or closed.
All the information in this document refering to the single phase or pole trip circuit
supervision relay model may be applied to the three phases or poles trip circuit
supervision relay model, except when it is specified the opposite.
4. Operational characteristics
4.1 Supervision Functions
The relay monitors the trip supply and correct state of fuses or Schneider Electric
Acti 9 circuit breakers of the circuit. It will initiate an alarm if the supply falls below the
assigned drop-out voltage (please refer § 7).
With the CB in the open and closed position, the relay supervises :
bb The trip circuit wiring
bb The CB’s trip coil
bb The CB’s 52a and 52b auxiliary contacts (Please refer to the diagrams § 6)
PM103521
The supervision is done with a small current that flows through the supervision-
circuit in series with the trip coil of the circuit breaker. The supervision current is
always less than 1.4 mA. This makes the relay suitable for the supervision of circuit
breakers with a low power consumption down to 4.5 W. Therefore, external current
limiting resistors are not needed because those resistors are considered internally in
the relay scheme.
bb Indicates if the trip coil fails to respond to a trip command.
bb The operation time of the circuit breaker must be less than 150 ms. If it is longer,
the relay will drop off and indicate a circuit failure.
bb In normal conditions the relay cannot produce an unwanted trip due to the high
impedance of its supervision circuit. Measures are taken to avoid a short circuit in
the supervision module by integrating a fuse that melts avoiding an unwanted
operation.
PM103523
bb The relay allows a latched protection trip contact (trip contact from a lock-out
relay).(Please refer to the condition § 6.3).

The LED is on and both contacts are in close position (terminal 5-9 and 6-10)
whenever the trip circuit is healthy.
The supervision is performed under the 4 possible conditions described in the

In this situation the trip contact can remain closed, e.g. if the protection relay trip
contact belongs to a lock-out relay.
In this case, the trip contact remains closed until the trip was recognized and the
lock-out relay would be reset.
