I. Background of the Study

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infection disease caused by a new strain of

corona virus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan
China, on December 2019. (WHO, 2020). The virus started in the city of Wuhan China where
wild animals are illegally traded, the virus then quickly spread all over the world and is now a
global pandemic. The corona virus disease known to target a person’s respiratory system, most
common symptoms are fever, tiredness, shortness of breath and dry cough. Increasing confirmed
cases and death are reported in many countries. Scientist and many authorities around the world
are still working and finding for the vaccine.

The first case of COVID-19 that was reported in the Philippines is the 38-year-old
female, Chinese national. Immediate case investigation and contract tracing was conducted with
those who have been in a social contact of the patient. The first case of local transmission in the
Philippines confirmed on month of March after verification that the 5 th case patient had no travel
history, and the patient’s wife tested positive for COVID-19 after contact tracing activities were
prompted. The entire Philippines subject under a state of calamity amid the threats amid COVID-
19

Philippine authorities are making actions on how to avoid the spreading of the virus and
implement protocols to be effectively stop the increasing of positive cases and death toll reported
each day for until now there is no vaccine to cure those who are affected. Philippine government
had the fear of becoming one of the countries that has many COVID-19 cases and lead to high
risk calamity, for there is still no vaccine and local transmission in many areas of Philippines is
confirmed.

Figure 1. COVID-19 CASES March 22 – March 28, 2020

The figure 1 shows that a total number of confirmed cases continue to increase in each
day. 1 to 5 death cases are reported in this week but there are no death case reported on March 16
and March 17, there are 1 recovery each day that is added in the total recoveries thus, there are
no reported recoveries on March 19. Community quarantine over the entire Luzon, “According
to President Duterte, the problem is they continue to go out when our purpose is really to just
secure them in their home so that they could not go out and transmit the disease.” (Pres. Duterte,
2020).

Positives Cases Death Recoveries

COVID-19 cases March 22 – March 28, 2020

The figure shows that in the week of March 22 to March 28, the rate of positive cases and
death increases each day. From 100 below cases of positive reported on March 22 to March 27
and 272 positive cases reported just in one day on March 28. Hence, there is a slow rising rate of
death and recoveries reported. “The public’s safety relies on everyone’s discipline in abiding by
our quarantine protocols to protect the public, especially our health workers and front line from
undue exposure.” (Sec.Duque,2020)

The graph shows the high rate of confirmed cases continue to rise each day and there are
still deaths reported in this week. Hence, there is no new record of recoveries on March 30.
“With a slashed budget for disease surveillance and epidemiology for 2020, contract tracing was
increasingly difficult in metro Manila for example, one of the world’s most densely populated
cities,” (Dr. Josh San Pedro, 2020).

many people still don’t understand.’ It is for this reason that President Rodrigo Duterte has been
in consultation with different experts across different sectors on how to best address the Covid-
19 situation in the country”. (Sec. Roque, 2020).

DOVID-19 CASES April 19 – April 25, 2020

The total confirmed cases of positive for coronavirus is still arising each day and the
record of daily death are still increasing but there are still reported recoveries “When we can see
that the number of cases is decreasing daily is when we can assume the curve is flattening. But
there are conditions, such as mass testing. DOH data is based on those who are confirmed
positive with the virus, but it has thousands of backlogs which we don’t yet know the results.”
