Sentence

Sentence helps us to convey any form of idea.

Examples
• I want a glass of water.
• Why don’t you come here?

Types of Sentences
• Simple sentence
• Complex sentence
• Compound sentence
• Compound Complex sentence

Simple Sentence
It has a subject and a verb or contains one clause.
It makes complete sense independently.

Examples
1. Ram is a good boy.
2. Tiger ran.
Compound Sentence
Compound sentences are formed by combination of two independent clauses.
Connected with a coordinating conjunction

Examples
1. Sam went and Ash came.
Clause 1 Sam went.
Clause 2 Ash came.

2. It was raining heavily but I was safe.


Clause 1 It was raining heavily.
Clause 2 I was safe.

Complex Sentence
Compound sentences are formed by combination of an independent and a
subordinate clause.
Connected with a subordinating conjunction

Examples
1. Although Sam was angry, Ash didn’t say sorry for her mistake.
Clause 1 Sam was angry.
Clause 2 Ash didn’t say sorry for her mistake.

2. Sam drained in rain because he forgot his umbrella at home.


Clause 1 Sam drained in rain.
Clause 2 he forgot his umbrella at home.

Compound Complex Sentence
Compound sentences are formed by combination of two or more independent
clauses and one or more subordinate clauses.
Connected with conjunctions

Examples
1. When parents called, Ash left and Sam came.
Clause 1 parents called.
Clause 2 Ash left, Sam came.

2. My parents were fighting when I came into the room, but they didn’t notice
me.
Clause 1 My parents were fighting, they didn’t notice me
Clause 2 I came into the room.
