General Report on Corrosion of steel reinforcement bars

Report prepared on the request of: - Mr. Manaf Al Ghafri

Subject: - Corrosion in steel reinforcement embedded in concrete

Steel reinforcement is embedded in concrete to increase its tensile strength of concrete frame and
therefore must be protected. If steel is not protected, then steel can be corroded and weaken the concrete
member (i.e. Beam, column & slab). The reasons of corrosion are mentioned as below (but not limited
to):-

1. The main reason of corrosion is presence of moisture and lack of adequate cover
2. Water leakage
3. Carbonation
4. Impurities in construction water
5. Other chemical reactions
6. Bad quality of steel used in Project

Following are the disadvantages of corrosion in steel reinforcement bar (but not limited to):-

1. Weaken the concrete member where steel is exposed to (beams, slab, column)
2. Spalling of concrete
3. Snapping of bars
4. Buckling of bars
5. Improper load transfer to other concrete members

Prevention of Corrosion includes following (but not limited to):-

1. Providing sufficient cover (as required)

2. Using good quality concrete as required
3. Proper compaction
4. Using FBE coated bars (if required and if applicable)
5. Use cement based polymers (if required and if applicable)
6. Use of Migratory Corrosion Inhibitors (if required and if applicable)

Test which can be used to measure the degree of steel reinforcement corrosion includes (but not limited
to):-

1. Rapid Chloride Permeability Test (RCPT) test to assess the degree of Corrosion
2. Half-cell potential test to determine likelihood of reinforcement corrosion
