What do your specifications look like for seismic?
If you are using the new CSI formatted specifications, you
probably have a section that looks like this:

This spec section will have some definitions and some

requirements for submittals. It may even have a section
entitled project conditions that looks like the following:

The problem with this specification is that it is
uses obsolete terms, concepts and data

The balance of this presentation will cover

what the current building codes require,
what a manufacturer needs to do in order to
comply with code, and suggestions for
updating your specifications.

Seismic Codes – United States

Current Codes
 IBC – International Building Code, 2009
 Adopted throughout U.S. Basis for shake table testing
 CBC – California Building Code, 2010
 Seismic sections – identical to IBC
 ASCE – Design Loads for Bldgs, 2010
 American Society of Civil Engineers
 Basis for IBC seismic sections

Obsolete Codes
 Regional Codes – merged to create IBC code (2000)
 BOCA – Building Officials and Code Administrators –
East Coast
 UBC – Uniform Building Code – West Coast
 SBC – Standard Building Code – Southeast

For high seismic zones:

SDS = 0.67 * SS (Mapped Max considered earthquake)

 California Maximum SDS = 1.93g(this value varies greatly across

the state!!)
 Proposed changes to 2012-IBC would increase SDS up to 2.49g
in California!

SDS values - shown in Compliance Document

DO NOT SPECIFY SDS = 1.93 FOR CONVENIENCE!!!

THIS WILL UNECESSARILY ADD COST TO YOUR PROJECT. USE THE
VALUE APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR PROJECT LOCATION!!!
