The centre of mass is a position defined relative to an object or system of objects. It is the

average position of all the parts of the system, weighted according to their masses. For simple
rigid objects with uniform density, the centre of mass is located at the centroid. For more
complicated shapes: it is the unique position at which the weighted position vectors of all the
parts of a system sum up to zero. (Khan Academy 2011).

From the lab beam reactions, I had learnt that there was a direct relationship between the
mass and the force exerted on the spring balances. The mass increases the force on the spring
balance also increased. The force exerted on the spring balances also depends on the point at
which the load is set. During point load at the centre and uniformly distributed load, the force
is in equilibrium whereas in point load alone the beam the force on the spring balances varied
depending on the point on the point of the load. This lab can be applied to the real world
when a crane is holding a car. The car being the mass applied and the crane being the spring
balance.

The position of centre of mass depends upon its shape and the way mass is distributed on its shape.
These two factors decide whether the centre of mass of gravity lie inside the body or outside the
body. If the solid body has a regular structure and its mass is distributed uniformly over its body
(i.e. for symmetrical objects) then its centre of gravity must lie inside the body. But if the solid
body has an irregular structure and the mass is not distributed uniformly then the centre of mass
may lie inside the body or outside the body. (Sagani 2019). An example of Centre mass present
outside the object is in the case of a circular ring the centre of mass is at the geometric centre
of the ring where no mass of the ring is present. (Chakraborty 2018)
