ADDITIVES FOR TEXTURE COATINGS

PROPYLTEX WAXES
PropylTex is a product series based on micronized polypropylene, and is our most comprehensive line of texturing agents. The coarser
grades of PropylTex provide a range of texture effects varying from subtle to aggressive, while the finer grades are often used to reduce gloss,
especially in applications with a high dry film thickness. These finer grades are superior to silica-based additives as they do not affect coat-
ing rheology and provide substantially better resistance to burnishing and abrasion. For even finer gloss reduction grades, please refer to our
PropylMatte products.

PropylTex will also impart a smoother surface feel when compared to inorganic texturing agents. The low density of polypropylene
provides an additive that will not settle as with silica-based products. These factors, along with a high degree of solvent resistance, make
PropylTex an excellent choice for all solvent based coating systems, including those containing aromatic solvents.

Coarse grades of PropylTex provide a non-skid surface effect with a higher COF compared to other polymeric texturing agents,
making them the perfect choice for coatings designed for walking surfaces.

PropylTex grades are commonly added at levels from 3% to 10% based on total formula weight in the following applications:

• Concrete and floor coatings.............................................PropylTex 20, 30, 50, 100S and 140S*
• Wood coatings.................................................................PropylTex 200S, 200SF, 230S* and 270S*
• Interior architectural coatings..........................................PropylTex 100S, 140S*

AQUATEX WAXES
AquaTex is a product series based on micronized oxidized polyethylene, making it especially useful in waterbased systems. The density of AquaTex
is nearly identical to water (1.0), resulting in a product that does not settle and has minimal to no flotation, depending on coating viscosity. The oxida-
tive functionality of AquaTex makes incorporation into waterbased systems easier and faster.
AquaTex is offered in many different particles sizes to provide the texture effect you desire. The finer particle size grades of AquaTex will provide
optimum abrasion resistance, gloss control, and will be less abrasive when compared to silica. For even finer gloss reduction grades, please refer to
our AquaMatte products. AquaTex grades also provide scratch and burnish resistance, making them an excellent choice for architectural coatings.

AquaTex grades are commonly added at levels from 3% to 10% based on total formula weight in the following applications:

• Interior architectural wall paints........................................AquaTex 230, 270 and 325

• Micro-texture overprint varnishes for packaging............. AquaTex 270 and 325
• General industrial and maintenance texture paints..........AquaTex 100, 140 and 200

NYLOTEX WAXES
NyloTex is a product series based on micronized polyamide (Nylon 6). NyloTex provides the highest melting point of any of
our texture additives, making it suitable for higher temperature applications. NyloTex will impart a consistent texture at high
baking temperatures in applications that include coil and powder coatings.
For gloss reduction in high temperature coatings, please inquire about our Nylofine 1000 additive.
NyloTex grades are commonly added at levels from 3% to 10% based on total formula weight in the following applications:

Paints & Coatings

MICRO POWDERS, INC.

Architectural Applications
Micro Powders, Inc., the recognized leader in innovative wax technology, prides itself in developing unique additives to meet
the demands of its customers and their varied applications. This bulletin highlights a broad range of products which will
enhance the appearance and performance of architectural paints and coatings. The key performance benefits and
recommended addition levels of selected products are provided. The typical method of incorporation is to add Micro
Powders’ micronized waxes to the formula at the let-down stage (no extra milling or grinding required). We also offer
aqueous dispersions of our micronized waxes where a liquid product is preferred.

Interior
Interior paints require burnish resistance and in many cases, gloss reduction
along with washability. These products provide those attributes while exhibiting
a low demand for vehicle – an important factor for the new low VOC paints.

PropylTex Series
A full range of highly durable polypropylene texture addi-
tives that are used in wall paints to create unique structure

Wood & Concrete Sealers

Micronized waxes from Micro Powders are essential ingredients in these systems, which include waterborne and solvent con-
crete sealers and exterior wood protection products. Water beading is quick and dramatic with a long lasting effect.

Exterior
Exterior paints and sealers are often very soft because of the low VOC content and
required coalescing properties. Micro Powders’ micronized waxes can add apparent
hardness and soil rejection without raising viscosities or increasing the demand for
vehicle. These waxes can actually improve long-term chalking properties.

waxes for immediate and long-term water repellency.

Trim
Both interior and exterior trim paints demand excellent gloss and block resistance. In some cases, low gloss is required.
These Micro Powders’ waxes are ideal for improving these properties while not affecting viscosities.

used for toughness, scratch resistance, smoothness to the hand, clarity and gloss reduction. A wide variety of products are
available from Micro Powders.

Texture
In today’s marketplace, many different surface appearances are required of finishes applied
to wood and composite substrates. The MPI products listed below represent a broad
selection of polymers and particle sizes to achieve texture.

Matting & Gloss Control

Low gloss and satin finishes often convey high quality in a wood coating. MPI offers a full
line of unique waxes designed to achieve high performance in demanding formulations while
maintaining recoatability.

Water Repellency & Beading

Exterior coatings are often required to provide water beading for both protective and aesthetic
reasons. MPI micronized waxes can provide these properties while increasing weather resistance
and durability of the coatings or stains.
