Introduction to FSSC 22000


The FSSC 22000 certification standard defines the requirements necessary to ensure a management system is in
place to meet the demands of regulators, food business clients and consumers. Organizations throughout the food
supply chain can be certificated regardless of their size or complexity. FSSC 22000 is recognized by the Global
Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and developed in response to the needs of the international food sector. The
FSSC 22000 Scheme is managed by the independent Foundation FSSC 22000.

FSSC 22000 is fully based on the international, independent standards. The aim of the Scheme is to ensure that
it continuously meets international food industry requirements resulting in a certification that assures that
organizations provide safe food to its customers.

The specific Scheme objectives are to:


a) Establish and maintain an accurate and reliable Register of certified organizations that have demonstrated to
comply with the Scheme requirements;
b) Promote the accurate application of food safety and quality management systems;
c) Promote national and international recognition and general acceptance of food safety and food safety quality
management systems;
d) Provide information and campaigns on food safety and quality management systems;
e) provide support for the certification of food safety management systems in the field of food safety and quality.

The scheme covers the following scopes.


 Animal and Plant Farming
 Food Manufacturing
 Production of food packaging and packaging materials.
 Production of Bio-chemicals
 Feed & Pet Food Manufacturing
 Provision of transport and storage services for perishable food and feed.
 Retail /Wholesale
The latest version 5 of FSSC 22000 was released June 3 2019. The main reasons for changes in the new
version of FSSC 22000 v 5 are:
 Publication of the new ISO 22000:2018 standard
 Inclusion of the Board of Stakeholders list of decisions
 Compliance with GFSI requirements
 Continual improvement process

All issued FSSC 22000 certificates v 4.1 will become invalid after 29 June 2021. Upgrade audits against
FSSC 22000 v 5 scheme requirements shall be conducted between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2020

Course Objectives:
The Objective of this awareness course is to present the audit requirements for FSSC 22000 certification. The
course will provide you an awareness on the following.
1) FSSC 22000 Additional requirements.
2) ISO/TS 22002-1 sector specific prerequisite program (PRPs) requirements and ISO 22000:2018 food
safety management system requirements

Case studies from past audit experience will be shared to understand how to implement the FSSC additional
requirements apart from the formal lectures, discussions, group exercises, take home exercise.

Course Tutor: Ms. Jacintha Joseph, B.Sc., M.Sc. (Microbiology) is a Lead Auditor for Food & Food
Packaging GFSI approved scheme of Standards, FSSC 22000/SQF with 12 years of extensive auditing experience
in USA/Canada. Ms Joseph has audited with the Leading Certification Registrars SGS USA, Bureau Veritas USA,
DNV USA, NSF USA & Intertek Canada. Has been an IRCA Principal Auditor for ISO 9001 Standards
previously, currently approved to audit FSSC categories A- Farming of animals (for meat/milk/eggs/honey) C,
K, L for FSSC 22000 for Food. With previous manufacturing experience in the Food and Beverage industry to
help participants gain understanding of the requirements of the Standard(s) FSSC 22000 additional requirements,
ISO/TS 22002-1:2009. Ms Joseph has been a Lead Tutor for ISO 22000 in 2009 and currently as Approved
Training Parnter for BRC Global standards for Food (v 8) and Food Packaging (v 6).

A certificate will be awarded to each participant on successful completion of


the course.
