make conclusions on each force; and the overall

including your company vis-à-vis the key

 EFE –
Factors cited in the EFE should be covered in
the external analysis. Ensure consistency
between the analysis and EFE factors.

 INTERNAL ANALYSIS -
Assess/Evaluate/Criticize what your company is
doing rather than just describing them.
Incorporate the critical success factors
 IFE –

The IFE factors should have been covered in


the analysis and vice versa. Explain the
weights and ratings. For strengths, use 3-4
and for weaknesses, use 1-2.

 STRATEGY FORMULATION TOOLS - Ratings
should be consistent with your CPM, EFE and IFE
results
 Use ALL the relevant tools, SWOT, BCG, IE,
SPACE GRAND STRATEGY, GE MCKINSEY and
QSPM.
 For SPACE Matrix, discuss the relevant factors
considered; Be consistent with your external and
industry analysis, and internal analysis. Use EFE
and IFE results, choosing those with larger
weights.
 Summarize results from all tools used. 9

use QSPM to evaluate a strategy or sets of
strategies (Note proper use of QSPM)

 STRATEGY MAP AND IMPLEMENTATION
/ACTION PLANS
Make a Strategy Map to guide you in crafting your action
plans. Make one set of action plans for each major
objective and strategy. Use the formats given to you in
class.
 FINANCIAL PROJECTIONS –
Must! At least three year coverage. FS includes projected
income statements, balance sheets and cash flow
statements. Make sure these are realistic and consistent
with your strategic objectives and strategies. You should
be prepared to justify your financial projections. Include
notes to the financial statements, similar to those found in
Annual Reports. 11

Don’t forget to include strategies that will address
the strategic issues identified and the major
weaknesses of the company
 No need for lengthy explanation of concepts and
tools
State your business and market coverage clearly:
Local vs. International. Put under separate headings.
No need to mention names and officers of company.

OTHER TIPS

 Integrate and tie-up everything. Be consistent in


your analysis.
YOUR RECOMMENDED STRATEGIES MUST FOLLOW
THE LOGIC OF YOUR ANALYSIS. Do not force-fit
with your company’s existing strategies. (Imagine
that you are the President of the Company.)
If your company has requested confidentiality,
print STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL on cover page
and collect papers from the panel after the defense.

THIS IS A FORMAL PAPER. IT MUST BE
PROFESSIONALLY DONE– use correct grammar,
sentence construction, etc. Proofread thoroughly and
edit well.
Number Chapters and Sections properly and make sure
it is consistent with your table of contents. Start each
chapter on a new page.
Number and label your Tables and Figures properly.

Use third-person format, not first-person format.

COMMENTS ON THE
STRAMA PAPER FORMAT

EDIT your work well. Be clear and concise. Use


correct grammar.
Be sure to include footnotes.
Be selective in choosing what data and tables to put
in the Appendix. Thicker is NOT better.
Use 1 ½ to 2 space format; number the pages for
easy reference when comments are given.
Number of pages. Ideal is 100-150 pages, including
attachments. Maximum: 150

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM


You may freely use other people’s ideas and
information if you give full credit to the sources of the
ideas and information.
2 reasons for accurately citing sources:
1. Academic honesty
2. Doing so gives credibility to your writing.
Two ways in which you may include information from
sources in your writing
1. Quote directly – when wording is distinctive and source adds
more credibility
2. Paraphase – when more efficient
Papers based on expert sources, properly
acknowledged, are exactly what instructors are
looking for
Run the plagiarism test and attach it to your paper.

Submission on the cover of the report.
 Carl will get in touch with you to finalize the
schedule for our oral presentation, after you
pay the appropriate fee and secure your
clearances from the Registrar’s office.

address (es) with Ms. Karen.
 Submit a cd copy of your paper in Word 19
format to Ms. Karen.

ORAL DEFENSE: OTHER TIPS


Power Point Presentation should be readable.
Only use bullet points.
Do not read from the screen. Face your audience.
Know your subject matter very well.
When possible, bring a sample of your product.
Wear proper business attire.
Rehearse your presentation in front of family or friends
at least once before the defense. Try to maintain a fast
pace when presenting.
Remember that you only have 50 minutes for the
presentation and Q&A. Your panel members would
have read your paper before you present so you do not
have to present everything in your slides. 20

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT:
Criteria for the Oral Defense
 Grading will be based on the degree to which
the student demonstrates mastery of the subject
through:
 the presentation of the summary and strategic issues
and strategy recommendations and
 handling of the questions from the panel members.

 The student’s oral communication skills.


 The clarity and effectiveness of the presentation
materials used are also important and will be
considered in the evaluation.

penalty will be imposed on the strama paper.
