Introduction/Background

BackBencher Developers aims to develop and maintain high-quality web applications for
various institutions and businesses. A web application to manage exam committees in school,
colleges and different autonomous institutions will provide greater business opportunity.

Business Objective

BackBencher Developers’ current objective is to grow and make profit. According to our survey,
a web application that manages exam committee tasks are currently in high demand. Therefore,
making such software will bring more profit. This will also help the company grow and make
unique kinds of software through visibility to other potential clients.

Current Situation and Problem/Opportunity statement

Currently the tasks handled by exam committee are all done manually, that is sending notices to
faculties and departments, fixing exam routine, managing special exams and all other
administrative tasks. There is an opportunity here to bring all these time and energy consuming
jobs online; any job requiring time in days and a carrier will be accomplished in a matter of
milliseconds. Also the financial aspect related to maintenance of exams which traditionally
require going to the bank can also be brought online.

Critical assumptions and constraints

The web application must be a valuable asset to the company. Exam committee members from
university and other institutions must support the project and provide feedback. The project
manager must lead the development, and the project team must include all members of the
company along with representatives from client organization. The web application must run on
client’s existing computers and must be user friendly. It must be secure so that unauthorized
users cannot access it.

Analysis of options and recommendation

As the company is new and the proposed product has high demand, the company has no option
other than to take the product to market. Freelancers can be hired to work on parts of the
product. But designing and implementing it with in-house developers and expertise will reduce
cost and maintain quality. The client is willing to take an active part in development and thus
recommends we build the web application in-house.
Preliminary project requirements

The main features of the web application includes the following:

1. The proposed product is a web application. So it must be accessible from any browser.
2. There are mainly two types of users: Admin and Teachers. Admin has special privileges
and can administer the whole website. Teachers will make an account and wait for
verification before login. Chairman of the exam committee will be considered as admin.
3. Admin will select and assign roles to teachers as question setters, moderator, examiner.
4. Bills will be automatically generated after each phase.
5. All of the user data will be stored in a secure database.

Schedule estimate

This project is estimated to be completed within two months and half months. We assume that
the web application will have a life cycle of at least four years.

Potential risks

The project carries several risks. The web application might not be user friendly or the clients
get confused while using the application. Thus making the client unhappy with this product.
Feedback from clients is crucial in developing a user friendly system and providing required
features. There are technical risks in choosing the type of language and framework we use for
server, database, user interface and also overall security. The main risk, however, is investing
time and money into this project and not realizing the project benefits.
