Dr. Phan Thanh Duoc & Dr. Mst. Sadia Mahzabin

TYPES OF JOINTS
BOLTED LAP BRACKET JOINT

Maximum force acting to

Fmax furthest bolts from moment M
Fmax
rmax Fmax= Mrmax/(Σxi2+Σyi2)
M
Σ means the sum of all xi,
Rotation yi coordinates of bolts
Fmax
centre Fmax For example:
Fmax= Mrmax/(8x12+4y12+
4y22)
When the joint fails  top&bottom bolts are firstly failed
in direct shear action
FIN PLATE JOINT
Determine the maximum bolt shear force for the web fin
plate joint from the action of moment M = 120 kNm
Σxi2 + Σyi2 = 8x702 +
4x352 + 4x1052 =
88200 mm2
rmax
Rotation
centre
Fmax =
120x0.126/0.088 =
171.4 kN
M = 120 kNm
OTHER ACTIONS

FEd Each bolt carries the same

V action: Fed = V/n
n: number of bolts

Superposition method is
applied for combined
actions of force and
moment
BOLTS IN TENSION
Flexible end plate joint

Tension bolts Classify as

pinned joint

Apply for
N simple
construction
M

This joint has very little moment capacity because of the

flexibility of end plate
BOLTS IN TENSION

F1
F1 y1 F2
F1 y2 F2
M
y1 y2 F2 F2 M F1
F1/F2 = y1/y2
F F2
2
F2= F1y2 /y1
F1 F1 F1 = My1/[2(y12 + y22)]
The moment action transfers to
the bolts
For general case:
M = 2F1y1+2F2y2
Fmax = Mymax/(Σyi2)
= 2(F1y1 + F1y22/y1)
