Replacing a Disk (for

S2900/S3900/S5900/S6900)
This section explains how to replace a disk.

Impact on the System

As replacing a disk may deteriorate the performance of the storage system, it is

recommended that you replace a disk when service load is light.

Prerequisites

Before you replace a disk, make sure that:

 A spare disk is ready.

 The replacement disk module must be certified by Huawei and match the
product model. Otherwise, services may be affected.

 The disk to be replaced has been located.

 The configuration data has been backed up.

Precaution

When you replace a disk, make sure that:

 If you need to replace the disk that has a potential risk to be faulty or to replace
failed RAID group member disks, please contact Huawei technical support engineers
for help to avoid an exception from occurring during the replacement.

NOTE:

Please perform pre-copy before replacing the disk that has a potential risk to be
faulty.

 The hard disks used by the can only be used in the .

 The hard disks used by the S2900 can only be used in the S2900.

 The disk is aligned with the slot and then insert the disk , applying force evenly.
Otherwise, the disk connectors may be damaged.
 When you remove a disk, pull out the disk partially from the slot first. Wait 20
seconds until the disk spins down. Then pull it completely out of the slot.

 The removed disk module may contain sensitive data. Keep the disk module
properly.

 To prevent disk damage, wait at least one minute after removal before
reinserting a disk, or after insertion before removing a disk.

 To avoid data loss, replace only the disk whose alarm/location indicator is on or
that is displayed as a faulty disk on the ISM interface.
NOTE:

The procedure for replacing a 2.5-inch disk is the same as that for replacing a 3.5-inch
disk. This document uses a 3.5-inch disk as an example.

Tools and Materials

Before you replace a disk, ensure that the following tools are available:

 ESD gloves

 ESD wrist strap

 ESD clothes

 ESD bag

 Tag

Procedure

1. Perform a system status inspection.

Start OceanStor Toolkit. On the homepage, choose MyTools > Maintain >
Inspection (including renewal inspection). The Inspection Wizard step 5-
1:Welcome page is displayed. On the wizard, select Real-time inspection and
perform the inspection as instructed by the wizard.

Wait until the inspection is complete. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault
based on the suggestions. Ensure that all system components run properly except
for the faulty part that is to be replaced. If the fault persists after the part
replacement, contact Huawei technical support engineers for help.

2. Wear the ESD clothes, ESD wrist strap, and ESD gloves.

3. Press the latch on the handle in the direction of the arrow, as shown in step (1)
in Figure 1.
4. Open the handle and pull out the disk, as shown in step (2) in Figure 1.

5. Put the removed disk into an ESD bag.

NOTICE:

The removed disk module may contain sensitive data. Keep the disk module
properly.

6. Wait one minute. Log in to the ISM, choose Event > Event Management on
the menu bar to display the Event Management page. Check whether the alarm on
the disk failure is cleared on the Faults tab.

7. Take the spare disk to be installed out of its ESD bag.

8. Insert the spare disk into a vacant slot, as shown in step (1) in Figure 2.
NOTICE:

Before you insert a disk, rotate the handle of the disk completely (rotate the handle
to the maximum angle). Otherwise, the disk cannot be completely inserted into the
slot.

9. Close the handle, as shown in step (2) in Figure 2.

If the disk running indicator blinks when the disk is starting, the backup data is
being migrated to the spare disk.

NOTE:

The storage system automatically reconstructs data onto the new disk based on its
configuration.

10. Check whether the installation has succeeded by viewing the disk running
indicator and alarm indicator.

 If the running indicator is on and the alarm indicator is off, the disk
has been successfully installed.

 If the alarm indicator is on, the disk may be improperly installed.

Remove the disk, wait one minute, and then reinsert it. If the alarm indicator
remains on, the disk is defective. Replace the defective disk with a new one.

11. Wait one minute. Log in to the ISM, and click Device Info in the navigation
tree. Check whether the status of each component is normal.

 If yes, the installation is complete.

 If no, choose Event > Event Management on the menu bar to display
the Event Management page. Click View on the Faults tab page to display the
Details dialog box. Then handle the fault according to the troubleshooting
suggestions. If the fault persists, contact Huawei technical support engineers.

Follow-up Procedure

After the disk has been replaced, label the replaced disk to facilitate subsequent
operations.
