PART – A
GUIDELINES FOR DISSERTATION WORK
1 INTRODUCTION
In general, students go through the exercises of report writing and its presentation on
various topics of different subjects during the course study in previous years, either
individually or in a group. Dissertation work is a further extension of such exercises, in
writing an exhaustive technical report and presenting it before the jury with Audio / Video,
aid, or as the case may be.
The choice for the dissertation shall be from known theories/topic. Thus it is not expected
that the student will contribute anything as original except further elaboration or explanation
on the said topic.
Writing in simple words will mean understanding in-depth and then writing it in one's words
with clarity.
2 SELECTION OF TOPIC
A Dissertation should lead to a thesis project that means it should lead to a design solution.
The choice of the topic - may also depend upon different components related to your Thesis
project. While selecting a Dissertation topic one shall look into their Thesis Project and see
the possible requirements or kind of character which will make it unique or increase its
Architectural & Design values. Many topics or sub-topics as taught in the class are simple
ones and some of these topics may attract your attention, for an academic pursuit that is in-
depth study and specialization for your future or higher studies as a part of your thesis topic
for the respective degree courses.
The Committee in its wisdom may allot altogether a new topic. Once the topic is finalized,
the student will write a synopsis covering Introduction, the importance/relevance of topics
and its details to be covered including its scope and methodology.
2.2 SCOPE
Generally, most of the subjects cover large areas with numerous applications, out of which
students will limit the study to a specific topic with a limited area having a few applications.
It is very important to state in the clearest manner possible the coverage of your study and
project
2.3 METHODOLOGY
In any research, it is not only important that you know WHAT to do but more essentially
HOW you will do it. The methodology is an organized table or framework which explains the
step by step process of doing your study.
The collection of data can be done through secondary sources; that is through
textbooks/reference books, journals, research papers, and other such publications. However
in some cases could be through primary sources such as sample surveys, desktop case
studies, visit the site, interviews, experiments, and one’s observations. The student will have
to spell out a specific method that will be adopted by him/her for carrying out the work
evolved. Based on the above, the work shall be listed out for the task to be done with its
schedule for its completion.
3 BIBLIOGRAPHY
The assembly of facts and analysis of ideas will be an evolutionary process. An appropriate
system of record-keeping must be established. It is essential to record full bibliography
including card index etc. Always note the precise source from where the said material is
obtained including its page number (if any). One may provide bibliographies for every
chapter and have them listed at the end. All the reference shall be arranged in alphabetical
order regardless of the articles a, an, and the.
While writing the bibliography one must put the author’s surname first, then the first name
and middle name or initial (if any). Separate the major elements with a period. Page
numbers are only necessary if the source is an article, but if it is a book, not necessarily
need to indicate them. The following are some of the examples of referencing of possible
sources and how one can include them in the Bibliography.
4 EXECUTION
It is always better to start working sooner than later. There is no set method for writing,
however, it would be better to first prepare an overall synopsis and then write down more
detailed synopsis of each part until the final text assumes a proper shape. Alternatively, the
text may be divided into small units each of which can be completed and subsequently
integrated into one as a whole. Remember, whatever system is adopted, the arrangement of
a dissertation should unfold logically in clear prose and demonstrate careful documentation
along with correct spelling and punctuation.
5 SUBMISSION FORMAT
5.1 REPORT:
The Dissertation Report will be in A4 Format. Word limit of the report would be from a
maximum of 100 pages (one-sided). 20% of the report text would be referenced, rest needs
to be paraphrased. APA System of referencing needs to be followed. Three hard copies of
your report in hard binding need to be submitted. This document will include the following:
a. Title page
b. Declaration Certificate
c. Abstract
d. Content
e. List of tables, illustrations, graphs, diagrams

g. Literature Review
h. Methodology
i. Analysis
j. Precedents – Exemplars – Best Practice

nature of your research.

the existing literature shall be brought out and mentioned. Plagiarism of any kind
