Rural Awareness Work Experience (RHWE)

Preamble:

The Rural Awareness Work Experience (RHWE) provides exposure


to Horticultural students to the natural setting of the village situations,
work with the farm families, identify their problems and make use of
various extension tools for transferring the latest horticultural technologies.
The students also get opportunity to study the various on-going schemes
related to horticulture and rural development and participate in their
implementation. The students would be given rigorous orientation and
familiarization on various issues and problems expected on farmers’ field
and hence would gain competence and confidence for solving problems
related to horticulture and allied sciences. It would be implemented in
adopted villages under the supervision of scientists. Activities designed are
mainly focused on intensive observations/analysis of socio-economic and
technological profile of the farm families in rural areas, participatory
extension approach and acquaintance with farming situations, farm
practices and interaction with progressive farmers. Soil testing has become
the integral part of RHWE. This will help orient our horticultural graduates
for participation in various rural developmental programme. The students
will also gain first hand information on industries during attachment with
identified agro based industries. The Rural Awareness Work Experience
(RHWE) will help the students primarily to understand the rural situations,
status of horticultural technologies adopted by farmers, prioritize the
farmers’ problems, prepare farm and village development plans and to
develop skills and attitude of working with farm families for overall
development in rural area. The timings for RHWE proposed coincide with
the main cropping season. The main objectives of this component are:

1.1 Objectives of RHWE Programme:
1. To make the students to stay in village with farmers who are having
horticultural background so that student will learn and get experience with
special reference to horticulture.
2. To make the students to get acquainted with socio-economic conditions of
farmers and their problems with reference to horticulture.
3. To provide an opportunity to the students for practical training and making
his / her own observations.

1.2 Duration:
The RHWE programme will be offered during VII semester of degree
programme and will be for one full semester of 12 weeks. The breakup of 12
weeks for various components will be as follows:-
1. Registration, Orientation and Placement 1 week
2. Actual RHWE work in villages 10 week
3. Examination 1 week
Total 12 week
The implementation of RHWE programme should be in Kharif
season.

1.3 Eligibility:
As per the provisions of the academic rules approved by MCAER
from time to time, students who are eligible for promotion to VII semester
shall register for RHWE programme.
Once the students register for RHWE programme, they will not be
allowed to register for any other courses.

1.4 Registration:
The students shall first register for RHWE programme at the college
on the date notified by the University / Associate Dean of the college.
After registration at the college, students will report to the officer
incharge of RHWE centre (Research Station/Agril. School/Research
Scheme) to which the students are attached. They should report to the centre
within seven days after registration and completion of orientation
programme.

2. Operation of RHWE programme:


2.1 Orientation of students:
The Associate Dean of the college shall organize orientation
programme for the students registered for RHWE programme. The
Associate Dean, the Heads of concerned sections, the Subject Matter
Specialists and Assistant Extension Specialist will participate in orientation
programme. The student will be oriented with RHWE programme on the
following aspect.
a) Objectives of RHWE programme.
b) Organization of RHWE programme.
c) Programme of work in the village.
d) Maintenance of records and work diary.
e) Assignments to be completed.
f) Discipline to be maintained.
g) Method of evaluation.
Orientation of students should be completed within three days after
registration.

2.2 Selection of RHWE Centre:
The Associate Dean of the college shall allot students to RHWE
centre i.e. Agricultural Research Station / Agril. School / Research Scheme
and even to the college itself.
Once the students are allotted to a centre, they will not be allowed to
change the centre on any ground including medical ground. The students
shall report to the centre within three days after orientation.

2.3 Selection of Villages:


The Associate Dean of the college will select 7 to 8 villages for
placement of students with the help of officer I/C of the centre, one month
before the commencement of RHWE programme. The Officer I/C of the
centre shall select villages by using following criteria.
a) The farmers should practice as many enterprises as possible viz.,
crop production of vegetable, fruits, flower crops etc.
b) There should be atleast 100 farm families in the village.
c) The village should be easily approachable by road and should have
a rural atmosphere.

2.4 Placement of Students:


After the students report to the officer I/C of the centre, he will allot
4-5 students to each of the selected villages. The students will go to their
allotted villages immediately. Officer I/C of the centre with the help of
Program Officer will arrange for providing accommodation to the students
during their stay in the village.

The girl students shall preferably be attached to the concerned college
and they will visit the selected villages preferably in the college extension
block.

2.5 Selection of host farmers:


Host farmers or contact farmers are those with whom the students will
work regularly during their placement and stay in the villages. The host
farmers should be i) co-operative, ii) practice maximum number of
enterprises on their farms and take apart in carrying farm operations, iii)
allow the students to observed and practice the farm operations on their
farms and iv) willing to provide all the required information to the student.
One student will be attached to one host farmer. In case any of the selected
host farmer is carrying only one or two enterprises, the students will collect
data for other enterprises from other host farmers.
Selection of host farmers shall be done by the committee consisting of
Officer I/C of the centre, Program Officer and the local officer of the State
Deptt. of Agriculture. The officers I/C of the centre will send a list of the
village wise host farmers and students to the Associate Dean.

2.6 Supervision of RHWE programme:
2.6.1 Formation of Advisory Committee:
There will be an advisory committee at each centre. The committee
will consist of following officers.
The advisory committee shall consist of the following members:

i. In-charge of the respective centre/ KVK/ Associate Professor or


Professor of the constituent college / Associate Professor or Principal
of the affiliated college Chairman

ii. Programme Officer Member


iii. One SMS from SMS team nominated by the Member
Associate Dean of the constituent
College in his jurisdiction

iv. The host farmer Member

The advisory committee will be responsible to formulate the


programme for the students, get it executed, supervised and scrutinize the
work of the student. The advisory committee shall meet periodically to
review and monitor the RHWE programme.

2.6.2 Assistant Extension Specialist (AES)/ Programme Officer (P.O,):


The Associate Dean of the college will appoint one Assistant
Extension Specialist for each centre where the students will be allotted for
the RHWE programme. The AES/P.O. will perform the following duties;
i. He will maintain the attendance of the student by making frequent visits to
the villages where students are posted. He will make three to four halts in
villages/week.

ii He will guide the students in day-to-day activities and in the conduct of
extension programmes and in carrying out the work of all discipline.
iii. He will supervise for regular submission of weekly diaries, monthly
abstracts of work done and reports.
iv. He will help the students in securing accommodation and solving their
problems as and when necessary.
v. He will assist the chairman of RHWE centre in arranging monthly meetings
and record minutes of meetings and guidance given by the SMS for further
guidance to the student.
vi. He will submit attendance of RHWE students to the ADAC and will collect
stipend and distribute to the students.

As AES/P.O. is the pivot for the successful working of the RHWE


programme, he should be a senior and experienced person in cadre of
Assistant Professor. The AES/P.O. will act as main functionary between the
students, RHWE centre and the college.
The University/College shall arrange orientation programme for the
AES/P.O.s in the latest technology well before he commencement of the
RHWE programme every year.

2.6.3 Subject Matter Specialist’s (SMSs):


Associate Dean of the college will appoint six subject matter
specialists, one for each RHWE subject viz., Horticulture, Agril. Economics,
Agril. Entomology, Plant Pathology, Agril. Chemistry, Soil science and
Agril. Extension. S.M.Ss shall visit the village where the students are posted
atleast twice a month including monthly meeting and guide the students in

the respective disciplines. The SMSs shall be appointed from the cadre of
Professor or senior Associate Professor.

2.6.4 Associate Dean’s Representative (A.D.R.):


Associate Dean of the college will appoint Associate Dean’s
Representatives (ADR) for every centre. ADR will be from amongst the
rank of Professors / Associate Professor. He will visit each village where
students are placed twice a month and also attend monthly meetings called
by the Officer I/C of the centre. He will supervise the work of every student
and help the students in solving their problems with the help of concerned
AES/P.O.

2.6.5 Chairman RHWE centre:


He will be overall incharge of the programme of the centre for
effective implementation of the programme.

2.7 Monthly meetings:


Officer I/C of the station will call the meeting of all the student
attached to the centre atleast once a month and discuss the progress of the
work problems of the cultivators confronted by the student. The monthly
meeting will also be attended by ADR, SMS’s and AES/P.O. attached to that
centre. The detail minutes of the meetings will recorded by the AES/P.O.
and will be submitted to the Associate Dean and Co-ordinator of the RHWE
programme of the respective college.

2.8 Attendance and discipline:
Placement in the village is compulsory for all the student who have
registered for RHWE programme. During entire period of RHWE
programme the students will not be allowed to register for any courses other
than RHWE and to participate in intercollegiate/interuniversity sports and
allied activities. The student should have minimum of 85 per cent attendance
in all the RHWE courses.
If the attendance of the student is between 75 to 85 percent and the
absence is on valid ground as recommended by AES/P.O. the Chairman of
the Advisory Committee may condone the less attendance on such ground
and such a student shall be permitted to stay in the village over and above
the regular period to make up this shortage of attendance. The Advisory
Committee will assign the specific additional programme to such student
during these days. The student will not be paid stipend for the period of their
absence and for the period of additional stay in the village.
If any student fails in fulfilling minimum attendance of 75 per cent,
his registration for RHWE programme will be cancelled and he will have to
repeat the RHWE programme.
The students will be allowed to leave the village only under
exceptional conditions viz., i) Illiness and unforeseen circumstances. ii) for
appearing semester end examination (repeat) of one or more courses, and iii)
whenever called by the Associate Dean or Chairman of the Advisory
Committee. The students who desires to leave the village shall obtain written
permission from the Chairman of the Advisory Committee.

During their stay in the village, student shall work on all the six days
in every week and will have a weekly holiday on every Sunday. They will
not avail other holidays notified by the University.
The students shall maintain good discipline during entire period of
their placement in the village and their behavior in the village should be
exemplary. Any misconduct of the students in the village will be viewed
seriously and such a student will be expelled from the RHWE
programme/college.

2.9 Weekly work diary:


The students will visit the farm of host farmer daily and record the
details of the different operations carried by the host farmer on his farm in
the daily work diary (RHWE Gen-1). They will also record in the weekly
work diary and will submit it to the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on
every Monday. The Chairman of the Advisory Committee and AES/P.O.
will check the weekly diaries of all the students and give marks. Each
weekly diary will be evaluated for 4 marks.

2.10 Monthly abstract of work:


The student will prepare a monthly abstract of work done by him in all
the RHWE subjects and will submit it to the Chairman of the Advisory
Committee at the end of every month which will be checked and evaluated
by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee and AES/P.O.(RHWE GEN-2).

3. Programme of Work
3.1 Components of RHWE programme
RHWE programme to be carried out by the students consists of the

Guidelines for collection of information, performing activities and report
writing.

3.2.1 Horticulture
Each student will collect information about the host farmer with
regards to horticultural crops by using following respective RHWE
schedules
a) Weather record:
The students will collect weather data of the village/nearest place
having observatory/station to which student is attached. They will depict
weather data graphically will also record the effect of weather on
horticultural crops grown by the host farmer and on incidence of pests and
diseases.
b) Techno-Economic survey of village and host farmer
i. On the basis of data collected the student, will give the comments
on use of available resources of host farmer on horticultural crop
production. Students will also indicate scope for bringing more
area under horticultural crops. (RHWE Schedule 2 C HORT-471
ii. In addition to the host farmer he will also collect and compile the
data regarding general position of horticultural crops in the village
as a whole and write the information RHWE Schedule 2A and 2B
(HORT-471 2) i.e. Techno horticultural survey of village.
c) Record of the daily operations
Students will visit daily the farm of the host farmers and will record
the details of various operations carried out by the host farmers for all the
horticultural crops. They will record the observations on incidences of pests
and diseases noticed on different horticultural crops and suggest control

measures to be adopted for the same. They will also indicate whether the
host farmer is adopting recommended package of practices for different
horticultural crops or not.
d) Summary of cost of cultivation for all crops
After collecting data of individual horticultural crops minimum two
fruit crops , two vegetables and one flower crop OR any five horticultural
crops in RHWE schedules, for ten weeks period. The student will fill the
respective RHWE schedule for individual horticultural crop separately and
work out the cost of cultivation, yields obtained and profit or loss on hectare
basis.
e) Besides above the student will conduct three method demonstrations on
horticultural operations
1. Demonstration of budding and grafting techniques in horticultural crops
2. Demonstration on layout of orchards for horticultural crops
3. Demonstration on digging and filling of pits for horticultural crops
4. Demonstration in scientific plantation of horticultural crops
5. Maintenance and aftercare of major horticultural crops
6. Demonstration on rejuvenation of old orchards
7. Knowledge and utilization of apps in seeking information about
production technology of horticultural crops
8. Demonstration on seed bed preparation
9. Group discussion on nursery management
10. Seed treatment in Horticultural crops
11. Planting method in Horticultural crops
12. Application of fertilizer and irrigation in Horticultural crops
13. Training and pruning in Horticultural crops
14. Harvesting and post harvest handling in Horticultural crops

f) They will also visit the hi-tech project involved in the sale of
flowers/vegetables in domestic and export market/processing unit and
prepare the report on its utility and scope for the benefit of the farmers.
g) The student will visit the watershed development project and prepare a
report on its impact on horticultural development.
h) The student will prepare one chart, one poster and one folder/leaflet.
i) The student will prepare weed album/report on nursery for HORT- 471
available with host or contact farmer.
j) The student will prepare and submit a monthly abstract of work done in
horticulture to the chairman RHWE centre.
k) Comprehensive report:
By utilizing the data collected in respective RHWE schedules and the
activities for performed under ‘e to i’ student will prepare a comprehensive
report on the horticultural crop grown and to be grown by the host/contact
farmer. The comprehensive report will cover the following points;
i) Horticultural crops grown and effect of weather, pests and diseases
these horticultural crops.
ii) Knowledge of host farmers about improved horticultural techniques
like bahar treatments, method of propagation viz., grafting, budding,
etc., use of growth hormones and chemicals, package of practices of
different crops and extent of adoption of the same by the host farmer.
iii) Harvesting method, packaging, post harvest handling, mode of
transportation, marketing system and extent of post harvest losses in
respect of horticultural crops.
iv) Processing of produce at farmers level and prospects for processing.
v) Problems faced by the host farmer.

vi) The student will discuss the utility of method demonstrations
conducted and visit to polyhouse / hi-tech / processing unit, etc.
The students will also suggest an alternate cropping plans to the
host farmers. They will also write in brief about their experience with
the host farmer.

i) RHWE Schedule-1 (EXTN-1): Techno-economic survey of the village.
The student will conduct Techno-economic survey of the village
where he is placed. He will collect data about social, economical,
agricultural, educational, health and other aspects of the village from
different sources viz., A) referring record of Grampanchayat, B.D.O.,
Tahasildar, School, etc, and B) by interviewing Sarpanch, Talathi,
Gramsevak, V.D.O. and Secretary of co-operative society etc.
In addition to this, each student will study minimum five extension
programmes going on I the village in the subject of crop production, poultry,
dairy, sheep, goat, horticulture fisheries, afforestation and other subjects
related to agriculture/horticulture and prepare a report for each of the
extension/development programme in the following format:

ii) RHWE Schedule-2 (EXTN-2): Techno-economic survey of selected
families.
The student will collect detail information of two families viz., a) host
farmer and Agril. labour. He will identify the problems of these families and
will suggest solutions to their problems.

iii) RHWE Schedule-3.1 (EXTN-3): Level of knowledge of the farmers


regarding package of practices.
The student will collect information on level of knowledge of the host
farmer in respect of recommended package of practices of three major
horticultural crops cultivated by him. For this the students will interview the
host farmer and will calculate his knowledge index in respect of the selected
crops.

iv) RHWE Schedule-3.2 (EXTN-3): Sources of information for improved


farm technology.
The student will collect information from the host farmer about the
sources from which he gets information on the package of practices of three
selected horticultural crops by the student for RHWE Schedule-6-A (EXTN-
3).

v) RHWE Schedule-3.3 (EXTN-3): Agril./Horticulture Extension analysis


sheet for identifying specific problems or gaps in adoption.
The student will collect information on i) Components of
recommended package of practices ii) Practices followed by the farmer for
three crops iii) Gaps in adoption iv) Problem/Reason (constraints) in

adoption. He will also indicate suggestions or solutions to overcome these
constraints.

vi) RHWE Schedule-3.4 (EXTN-3): General problems related to


Agriculture/Horticulture.
In this schedule, the students will collect information about general
agricultural/horticultural problems faced by the host farmer. He will
ascertain from the host farmer how he will try to overcome three problems.
The student will then offer his remarks on the problems faced by the host
farmer.

vii) RHWE Schedule-3.5 (EXTN-3): Kind of technical know-how and


assistance needed in different areas of activities.
The student will record in this schedule the type of technical know-
how and assistance needed by the hot farmer in horticultural development
i.e. vegetable growing, fruit growing, floriculture, nursery management and
PHT.

III) (a) Staging method demonstration:


The students will arrange two method demonstrations on improved
technology for the host farmers and a group of neighboring farmers. For the
conduct of method demonstration, the student will adopt following steps:-
i) The students will analyse the need and the subject for method
demonstration.
ii) He will give wide publicity about place, date and timing for
conducting method demonstration well in advance.
iii) He will select the place which will be convenient to the farmers.

iv) He will ensure that the material required for conducting the method
demonstration is available.
v) He will conduct demonstration step by step and allow all the
participants to have a good look at the demonstration and to take part
in the discussion.
vi) He will practice himself before carrying out the method
demonstration.
vii) He will give opportunity to individuals to practice skill.
viii) He will distribute leaflets and other literature related to the
demonstration.
ix) He will take few photographs of each field demonstration and attach
at least one photograph with a report of each demonstration.
x) The students will prepare a report for the each method demonstration

b) Organizing field visits:
The student will organize five field visits of the farmers to the farms of
progressive farmers, to the processing units, watershed development projects,

c) Organizing group discussions:
All the students posted in the village will organize minimum two
group discussions for the farmers/farm women on the topics based on the
needs of the farmers. They will adopt following steps in organizing the

i) Select the topic based on the needs of the farmers such as secondary
occupation, health, food and nutrition, improved method of cultivation
of important horticultural crops of the village.
ii) Collect and prepare specimens, samples, models and other teaching
aids, charts, posters and slides.
iii) Collect enough technical information on the topics.
iv) Decide the effective speakers for the meeting.
v) Decide the place, date and time of the group discussion in consultation
with villagers.
vi) Give wide publicity.
vii) Start the meeting in time.
viii) Conduct the group discussion according to schedule.
x) Allow farmers to participate in the discussion.
xi) Distribute extension literature.
xii) Give vote of thanks to the audience.
Note- Out of the two group discussions, one discussion will be organized by
involving scientists, field extension workers of development deptt.

d) Organizing Farmer's School:
A group of students placed in the village will identify the problem and
select suitable topic of interest of farmers and prepare themselves for
delivering talk to the farmers/farmwomen at convenient time and place in
the evening. Each student will deliver minimum five talks and prepare a
report on farmer's school activity.
e) Organizing farmers rally and Agril. exhibition:
The students will organize farmers rally and agril. exhibition in the
village for giving information on different subjects of agriculture/horticulture and
related fields. They will take following steps in organizing the rally and agril.
exhibition.
i. Select the topics for the rally based on the needs of the villagers.
ii. Collect enough technical information on the selected topics.
iii. Collect the specimens, samples, models and other materials required for
effective teaching and staging agril. exhibition.
iv. Prepare slides, photographs, charts, posters on the selected topics.
v. Decide the place, date and time of the rally in consultation with villagers.
vi. Chalk out detailed agenda of the rally.
vii. Decide the speakers from amongst the students themselves.
viii. Decide the names of dignitaries, viz., Chief guest, Chairman to be invited for
the rally in consultation with villagers and Officer I/C of Centre/AES/P.O.
and give them a formal invitation.
ix. Decide the names of experts/scientists to be invited as speakers for the rally
and give them formal invitation.
x. Print invitation cards and send them to villagers and dignitaries well in
advance.

xi. Make necessary arrangements for conduct of farmer's rally and also arrange
agril. exhibition on the occasion of the rally.
xii. Start the rally at schedule time.
xiii. Follow the programme of rally in sequence, viz., welcome, lectures by
student/scientists, question answer, speeches of chief guests and chairman
and vote of thanks.
xiv. Give publicity to the farmers rally and agril. exhibition in local newspapers
and also take photographs of the rally. Each students will prepare a report on
the rally in the following format.

A) Preparation of Information Corner :
The student will prepare five charts, five posters, five leaflets and five
folders on village problems, crop production, animal management, plant
protection, post harvest processing, etc. He will display the information
material in the exhibition as well as at the time of group discussion, farmer’s
rally, training class.

B) Rural Social Service Activities / Programmes :


The student will organize five activities / programmes in the village
other than ten specified extension activities / programmes.
The activities may include blood donation, tree plantation, sports
competition, youth activities, health cover, health check-up camps, adult
education, celebration of festivals, etc. Each student will prepare a detail
report on these activities and will attach photographs, invitation cards, news
cuttings, etc.

The students will prepare a monthly abstract of work done in

Comprehensive Report :

The student will prepare a comprehensive report of extension


activities / programmes carried out during the stay in the village. The report

a) The student should state about the efforts made by him to increase the
knowledge level and adoption of improved agricultural / horticultural
practices on the fields of host farmers.
b) The student should indicate the teaching methods and aids used by him or
transfer of technology among the farmers.
c) He should indicate about the efforts made by him for enhancing rural

d) He should mention about the problems faced by him in transfer of
technology and steps taken by him in overcoming these problems.

RHWE ECON – 471 Agricultural Economics
The student will conduct socio-economic survey of the village where he is
posted. In addition, he will conduct techno-economic surveys of the host farmer.
The student will also collect data on agricultural/ horticulture business of the host
farmer. From this data, the student will prepares a) A suitable economic
development plan of the village, b) Alternate farm plan of the host farmer or Loan
proposals for the host farmer.
The work of agricultural economics under the RHWE programme will
consist of the following components.
i. Conduct of socio-economic survey of the village and techno-economic
survey of host farmer.
ii. Preparation of alternate farm plan host farmer.

iii. Preparation of loan (short, medium and long term) proposal for the host
farmer.

i) RHWE ECON Schedule-1-Techno-economic survey of village :
The student will collect statistical data on HORTICULTURE, social,
economic, health, education and communication aspects of the village where he is
posted. He will collect this data from different sources viz., Grampanchayat office,
Talathi, B.D.O., Tahasildar, etc.
From this schedule, the student will prepare a report on economic and
agricultural situation in the village and will give suitable action plan for overall
development of the village economy.

ii) RHWE ECON Schedule-2 - Techno-economic survey of host farmer


The Student will collect information of host farmer . The data includes
information about family size, land holding, cropping pattern, livestock, other
capital assets, agricultural production, income and expenditure. The student will
collect this information by interviewing the host farmer .
The student will utilize this data of the family of host farmer for preparation
of a alternate farm plan. He will also utilize this information for describing the
socio-economic status of selected families, problems faced by them an action plan
proposed to solve these problems.

iii) RHWE ECON Schedule-3 : Record of daily operations (plot wise)


The student will collect information about day-to-day operations carried out
by the host farmer separately for each plot and for each crop both agricultural and
horticultural. He will visit the farm of the host farmer daily and will collect plot
wise information on operations carried, labour engaged, inputs used and their
values. He will collect this data for the entire period of his stay in the village for

kharif season (land preparation to marketing), by cost accounting method. He will
collect data of preceding seasons i.e., summer and rabi by survey method.
This data forms basis for estimation of per hectare cost of cultivation of
different crops grown by the host farmer and is to be used for preparing alternate
farm plan.

iv) RHWE ECON Schedule-4 : Summary of cost of cultivation of different


crops :
The student will prepare a summary of cost cultivation for different crops
grown by the host farmer by utilizing the data collected in RHWE schedules for
crop production (Agriculture and Horticulture). He will suggest a suitable alternate
farm plan which will be technically feasible and economically viable for the host
farmer so that the host farmer will gain more profit and more employment.

Preparation of bank loan proposals :


The student will work out the financial requirement of the host farmer on the basis
of alternate farm plan and will prepare three types of loan proposals for the host
farmer. They are;
i) Short term loan – To be submitted to Primary Agril. Co-operative Society/Co-
operative Bank.
ii) Medium term loan – To be submitted to Nationalized Bank or District Central
Co-operative Bank.
iii) Long term loan – To be submitted to Maharashtra State Agriculture and Rural
Development Bank or Nationalized Bank.

He will collect blank forms of different kinds of loans and prepare bank loan
proposals by filling these forms and attaching relevant documents on behalf of the
host farmers.

Note on Marketing Problems Faced by the Host Farmer :


The student will study present marketing facilities available for the host
farmer for disposal of his farm produce and problems faced by the farmer in
marketing. He will also visit nearby market and study marketing operations. He
will prepare a brief note on marketing problems faced by the host farmer and
suggest remedial measures for the same.

Comprehensive Report :
The student will prepare comprehensive report by utilizing the data collected in
RHWE schedules 1 to 4.
The student will indicate the present cropping pattern and animal production
in the village along with their economic returns. Similarly, he will describe
agriculture/horticulture and animal production obtained by the host farmer and its
economic viability.
On the basis of this data, the student will suggest alternate farm plan for the
host farmer wherein he suggest names of remunerative crops for adoption by the
host farmer. He will also indicate the quantum of different types of loans required
by the host farmer.
He will summarize the economic conditions of different categories of the
farmers in the village, marketing problems faced by the farmers, credit availability
and will also suggest action plan for overcoming these problems.

RHWE ENT-471, Integrated Plant Protection-I, Credits 0+2
The student will collect the information about weather record, crop pest
status in the village, pesticide use pattern of the host farmer, seasonal pest
incidence and integrated pest management practices followed by the host farmer
with help of following RHWE schedules ENT 1 to 5:
a. RHWE schedule – 1 (ENT-1): Weather record
b. RHWE schedule – 2 (ENT-2): Seasonal incidence of insect pest.
c. RHWE schedule -3(ENT-3): Pest management practices followed by the
host farmer
d. RHWE schedule - 4(ENT-4): Pesticide use pattern of the host farmer.
e. RHWE schedule - 5(ENT-5): Crop pest status of the major crops of the
village.

Part A

a. RHWE Schedule -1 (ENT-1): Weather record


The student will collect the weather data as in RHWE
Schedule-1 for the actual stay of 12 weeks only and will correlate with level
of pest incidence. The students will prepare a brief report of pest incidence.
b. RHWE Schedule -2 (ENT-2): Seasonal incidence of insect pest
The students will observe and record day to day pest incidence on
(Vegetable, fruit and flower crops) or any five horticultural crops form
sowing/planting to harvesting and even after post harvest as given in the
schedule. Pests incidence will be recorded as per the meteorological weeks
so as to draw conclusion. They will also record their observations on
beneficial insects viz. parasites, predators and honeybees etc. The students

will correlate the pest population/damage by the pests/natural enemies in
relation to the weather parameters and record crop losses. They will write a
report on the above points.

c. RHWE Schedule -3 (ENT-3): Pest management practices followed by


the host farmer.
The Student will observe and record pest management practices
followed by the host farmer on five (minimum two each from fruits
vegetables and one floricultural crops) important horticultural crops. They
will include plant protection operations carried by the host farmer from
village to harvesting and even/after harvest of the crops. Students will write
a report considering the observations and operations performed by the host
farmer.

d. RHWE Schedule -4 (ENT-4): Pesticide use pattern of the host farmer.


The student will observe and record day to day plant protection
operations carried out by the host farmer in daily and weekly diary and will
record in monthly abstract of work done. Pesticide used by the host farmer
will be classified in the categories of pesticides along with percent
consumption of each category. They will also classify different types of
formulation as mentioned in the Schedule and will workout comparative
consumption of each category (support with graphical presentation). The
students will record observation critically on question nos. 1 to 18 in the
Schedule. They will write a details report based on their observations and
operations performed by the host farmer.

e. RHWE Schedule -5 (ENT-5): Crop pest status of the major crops of the
village.
The student will collect the information from farmers on the pest
causing damage to the major crops grown in the village. The classified list of
pests observed should be recorded in the Schedule. They will also collect the
information on different types of plant protection equipments available in
the village and classify them as per the categories mentioned in the
Schedule. The report on the above aspects will be prepared by them.

g. Organization of method demonstration.


The student will organize one method demonstrations on spraying or dusting
any IPM aspects. They will prepare a report on the guidelines given in the RHWE
EXTN-471.

The student will prepare one leaflets on IPM in any horticultural crop.
i. Survey
The student will undertaken a survey on Krishi Seva Kendra/Pesticide
dealers of the village or nearby village in order to know the availability, sale of
pesticide and plant protection appliances etc. in following proforma (Minimum 10
pesticides from different groups) and will write a brief report.

j. Collection of insect specimen


The student will collect at least 5 insects specimens, plant parts infected and
their damaging stages and will educate the farmers. They will prepare a list of

d) RHWE Schedule-4 (PATH-4) - Plant Disease Diagnostic Technique:


The students will collect at least five plant disease samples of all the major
crops grown by the farmers and will make observations of the samples in the
laboratory. They will write a summary report on this.

e) RHWE Schedule-5 (PATH-5) - Fungicides and Plant Protection Appliances


Availability and Their Position in the Village:

The students will collect information on availability of fungicides and plant


protection appliance from host farmers, other farmers of the village and from
service co-operative society, etc. The source of purchase and prices of plant
protection appliances and fungicides will also be recorded by them. The students
will prepare a brief report on this.

f) RHWE Schedule-6 (PATH-6) – Recycling of Organic Matter:


The present method of decomposition of organic matter followed by the host
farmer will be studied and compared with the recommended procedure. The

student will conduct a method demonstration on improved method of organic
recycling on the host farmer’s field by considering the points in the schedule. The
student will summarize this activity in a brief report.

g) RHWE Schedule-7 (PATH-7) – Awareness of Plant Protection Measures:


The student will collect the information about plant protection measures
from the host farmer on the points giving in the Schedule and summarize it in
brief.

h) RHWE Schedule-8 (PATH-8) – Plant Disease Management on Host


Farmer’s field:
The students will collect information on the points given in the schedule
from their host farmer and will simultaneously recommend the appropriate
package of plant disease management practices. The student will summarize the
collected information in the form of a report.

i) In addition to above, the students will organize and conduct one method
demonstrations on seed treatment, compost making, mushroom cultivation,
preparation of fungicidal solution, application of bio fertilizers, etc. they will
prepare a report on the guidelines given in RHWE EXTN-471.

j) The student will prepare one leaflets /folders on integrated plant disease
management.

k) The student will prepare a plant disease album containing minimum ten
properly preserved disease samples, indicating the following

The detailed guidelines regarding collecting information with the help
schedules and the other activities to be performed in Course No RHWE
ACSS-471 are given here under.

I) RHWE Sch. (SSAC-1) Techno-economic survey of host farmer.
Every student will collect the information on assets i.e. land, its, irrigation,
and use of inorganic fertilizers and the information on point nos. 3 to 8 given in the
schedule from the host farmer by making frequent visits to the host farmer and his
farm. They will collect data for current kharif season, preceding summer and rabi
seasons. The data so collected will be analyzed and interpreted for judging the
fertility status of soils and status of integrated nutrient management by the host
farmer. The student will prepare a brief report on these aspects.

II) RHWE Sch. (SSAC-2) Preparation of soil test report for vegetables and
fertilizer recommendation.
Students will collect one surface soil sample (depth 22.5 cm) by ‘V’ notch
and one profile sample from the fields of the host farmer and other farmers of the
village and will analyze immediately within the first fortnight form the inception of
RHWE programme. They will interpret the analytical data of soil samples, as per
the six tier system and will give the recommendations to the individual farmers.
The students will also compare the fertilizers used by the farmer’s with the
recommended doses and will comment on excess or deficit use of fertilizers by the
farmer’s in the report.
III) RHWE Sch. (SSAC-3) Preparation of soil test report for fruit crops and
comment on suitability of land.
Students will collect one profile sample from the fields of the host farmer and other
farmers of the village and will analyze immediately within the first fortnight form
the inception of RHWE programme and students will comment on the suitability of
land for horticultural fruit crops.

Comprehensive Report :
The student will prepare a comprehensive report by utilizing the data from
various SSAC RHWE schedules on following points.
i. Host farmer’s soil classification, fertilizer recommendation, irrigation water
sources, adoption of integrated nutrient management and soil testing by the
host farmers. Awareness of host farmer regarding soil testing services,
organic recycling-present position, chances to improve and proposed
planning.
ii. Plot wise information regarding soil test reports, recommendations. Impact
of farmer’s school,
iii. Efforts made to popularize integrated nutrient management
practices,Targeted approach in farming and constraints faced.

Activities/ Vision :
1)Farmers school on Targeted yield approach for one horticultural crop (Onion,
Okra, Brinjal, Merigold and Banana)
Students will study the various aspects of Targeted yield approach for different
horticultural crops given in krishi darshani and deliver talks to a group of farmers
and farm women at the convenient place and time in the evening.
They will submit a brief report on the topics covered by them in farmers school
with the reactions of the farmers.

2)Demonstration on Preparation of compost making.


The student will organize a method demonstration on improved method of
preparation of FYM/Compost and guide them to adopt the same. The student will
explain the demerits of the traditional method of preparation of FYM presently

used by them. They will also persuade the farmers for the use of organic manures
such as PMC (Press Mud Cake), spent wash, etc. and will guide them regarding
their mode of application. They will identify the problem of the farmers in this
regard and will offer solution to overcome the problems. A brief report will be
prepared by the students.

3) Demonstration on Application of fertilizer to fruit crops


Students will study the various methods of fertilizer application to
the horticultural crops and deliver talks to a group of farmers and farm
women at the convenient place and time in the evening and show the
demonstration on Application of fertilizer to fruit crops
.
Monthly abstract of work done :
The student will prepare a monthly abstract of work done in Agril.
Chemistry and Soil Science and will submit the same to the Chairman RHWE
centre.

4. Evaluation
4.1 Components of RHWE, work credits and marks allotted:
The RHWE work to be carried out by the student is divided in to nine
components (Courses) and will be evaluated for 21 credits. The details of
nine components, credits and marks allotted are given as below.

4.2 System of Evaluation:


The evaluation of RHWE work programme under different courses by
the student will be carried out by the Advisory Committee Members of the
RHWE Centre and the Subject Matter Specialists appointed by the Associate
Dean of the College.

4.2.1 Evaluation of Weekly Diaries :
The Chairman of Advisory Committee of RHWE Centre and
AES/P.O. of the RHWE Centre will evaluate weekly diaries submitted by the
students during the RHWE programme period, the student will be required to
submit 10 weekly diaries for 40 marks. Each weekly diary will be evaluated for 4
marks, guidelines for which are given below.

4.2.3 Every student undergoing RHWE programme will prepare a separate file for
each course. These files will contain both the subcomponents of a course to be
evaluated by the SMS's and the Advisory Committee Members.
The files should be submitted by the students to the Chairman of the RHWE
centre bearing completion certified signed by the AES/P.O. and the Chairman of
the Advisory Committee of the RHWE centre. They will also submit a separate file
containing twenty weekly diaries duly evaluated by the Chairman Advisory
Committee.

4.2.4 The Advisory Committee will conduct the final examination of RHWE
students at respective RHWE centers, for the subcomponents of RHWE courses
assigned to them.

4.2.5 Office of the Associate Dean of the college will collect the files from
concerned RHWE centers with the help of AES/P.O. and hand over for evaluation
to the concern SMS.

4.2.6 Finalization of Results
After receipt of marks from the Advisory Committee and SMS, the
marks obtained by each student will be recorded by the Associate Dean's office and
result will be prepared at the college level.
