Preamble:
1
1.1 Objectives of RHWE Programme:
1. To make the students to stay in village with farmers who are having
horticultural background so that student will learn and get experience with
special reference to horticulture.
2. To make the students to get acquainted with socio-economic conditions of
farmers and their problems with reference to horticulture.
3. To provide an opportunity to the students for practical training and making
his / her own observations.
1.2 Duration:
The RHWE programme will be offered during VII semester of degree
programme and will be for one full semester of 12 weeks. The breakup of 12
weeks for various components will be as follows:-
1. Registration, Orientation and Placement 1 week
2. Actual RHWE work in villages 10 week
3. Examination 1 week
Total 12 week
The implementation of RHWE programme should be in Kharif
season.
1.3 Eligibility:
As per the provisions of the academic rules approved by MCAER
from time to time, students who are eligible for promotion to VII semester
shall register for RHWE programme.
Once the students register for RHWE programme, they will not be
allowed to register for any other courses.

1.4 Registration:
The students shall first register for RHWE programme at the college
on the date notified by the University / Associate Dean of the college.
After registration at the college, students will report to the officer
incharge of RHWE centre (Research Station/Agril. School/Research
Scheme) to which the students are attached. They should report to the centre
within seven days after registration and completion of orientation
programme.

The girl students shall preferably be attached to the concerned college
and they will visit the selected villages preferably in the college extension
block.

2.6 Supervision of RHWE programme:
2.6.1 Formation of Advisory Committee:
There will be an advisory committee at each centre. The committee
will consist of following officers.
The advisory committee shall consist of the following members:

ii He will guide the students in day-to-day activities and in the conduct of
extension programmes and in carrying out the work of all discipline.
iii. He will supervise for regular submission of weekly diaries, monthly
abstracts of work done and reports.
iv. He will help the students in securing accommodation and solving their
problems as and when necessary.
v. He will assist the chairman of RHWE centre in arranging monthly meetings
and record minutes of meetings and guidance given by the SMS for further
guidance to the student.
vi. He will submit attendance of RHWE students to the ADAC and will collect
stipend and distribute to the students.

2.8 Attendance and discipline:
Placement in the village is compulsory for all the student who have
registered for RHWE programme. During entire period of RHWE
programme the students will not be allowed to register for any courses other
than RHWE and to participate in intercollegiate/interuniversity sports and
allied activities. The student should have minimum of 85 per cent attendance
in all the RHWE courses.
If the attendance of the student is between 75 to 85 percent and the
absence is on valid ground as recommended by AES/P.O. the Chairman of
the Advisory Committee may condone the less attendance on such ground
and such a student shall be permitted to stay in the village over and above
the regular period to make up this shortage of attendance. The Advisory
Committee will assign the specific additional programme to such student
during these days. The student will not be paid stipend for the period of their
absence and for the period of additional stay in the village.
If any student fails in fulfilling minimum attendance of 75 per cent,
his registration for RHWE programme will be cancelled and he will have to
repeat the RHWE programme.
The students will be allowed to leave the village only under
exceptional conditions viz., i) Illiness and unforeseen circumstances. ii) for
appearing semester end examination (repeat) of one or more courses, and iii)
whenever called by the Associate Dean or Chairman of the Advisory
Committee. The students who desires to leave the village shall obtain written
permission from the Chairman of the Advisory Committee.

During their stay in the village, student shall work on all the six days
in every week and will have a weekly holiday on every Sunday. They will
not avail other holidays notified by the University.
The students shall maintain good discipline during entire period of
their placement in the village and their behavior in the village should be
exemplary. Any misconduct of the students in the village will be viewed
seriously and such a student will be expelled from the RHWE
programme/college.

3. Programme of Work
3.1 Components of RHWE programme
RHWE programme to be carried out by the students consists of the
following components

Guidelines for collection of information, performing activities and report
writing.
3.2.1 Horticulture
Each student will collect information about the host farmer with
regards to horticultural crops by using following respective RHWE
schedules
a) Weather record:
The students will collect weather data of the village/nearest place
having observatory/station to which student is attached. They will depict
weather data graphically will also record the effect of weather on
horticultural crops grown by the host farmer and on incidence of pests and
diseases.
b) Techno-Economic survey of village and host farmer
i. On the basis of data collected the student, will give the comments
on use of available resources of host farmer on horticultural crop
production. Students will also indicate scope for bringing more
area under horticultural crops. (RHWE Schedule 2 C HORT-471
ii. In addition to the host farmer he will also collect and compile the
data regarding general position of horticultural crops in the village
as a whole and write the information RHWE Schedule 2A and 2B
(HORT-471 2) i.e. Techno horticultural survey of village.
c) Record of the daily operations
Students will visit daily the farm of the host farmers and will record
the details of various operations carried out by the host farmers for all the
horticultural crops. They will record the observations on incidences of pests
and diseases noticed on different horticultural crops and suggest control

measures to be adopted for the same. They will also indicate whether the
host farmer is adopting recommended package of practices for different
horticultural crops or not.
d) Summary of cost of cultivation for all crops
After collecting data of individual horticultural crops minimum two
fruit crops , two vegetables and one flower crop OR any five horticultural
crops in RHWE schedules, for ten weeks period. The student will fill the
respective RHWE schedule for individual horticultural crop separately and
work out the cost of cultivation, yields obtained and profit or loss on hectare
basis.
e) Besides above the student will conduct three method demonstrations on
horticultural operations
1. Demonstration of budding and grafting techniques in horticultural crops
2. Demonstration on layout of orchards for horticultural crops
3. Demonstration on digging and filling of pits for horticultural crops
4. Demonstration in scientific plantation of horticultural crops
5. Maintenance and aftercare of major horticultural crops
6. Demonstration on rejuvenation of old orchards
7. Knowledge and utilization of apps in seeking information about
production technology of horticultural crops
8. Demonstration on seed bed preparation
9. Group discussion on nursery management
10. Seed treatment in Horticultural crops
11. Planting method in Horticultural crops
12. Application of fertilizer and irrigation in Horticultural crops
13. Training and pruning in Horticultural crops
14. Harvesting and post harvest handling in Horticultural crops

f) They will also visit the hi-tech project involved in the sale of
flowers/vegetables in domestic and export market/processing unit and
prepare the report on its utility and scope for the benefit of the farmers.
g) The student will visit the watershed development project and prepare a
report on its impact on horticultural development.
h) The student will prepare one chart, one poster and one folder/leaflet.
i) The student will prepare weed album/report on nursery for HORT- 471
available with host or contact farmer.
j) The student will prepare and submit a monthly abstract of work done in
horticulture to the chairman RHWE centre.
k) Comprehensive report:
By utilizing the data collected in respective RHWE schedules and the
activities for performed under ‘e to i’ student will prepare a comprehensive
report on the horticultural crop grown and to be grown by the host/contact
farmer. The comprehensive report will cover the following points;
i) Horticultural crops grown and effect of weather, pests and diseases
these horticultural crops.
ii) Knowledge of host farmers about improved horticultural techniques
like bahar treatments, method of propagation viz., grafting, budding,
etc., use of growth hormones and chemicals, package of practices of
different crops and extent of adoption of the same by the host farmer.
iii) Harvesting method, packaging, post harvest handling, mode of
transportation, marketing system and extent of post harvest losses in
respect of horticultural crops.
iv) Processing of produce at farmers level and prospects for processing.
v) Problems faced by the host farmer.

vi) The student will discuss the utility of method demonstrations
conducted and visit to polyhouse / hi-tech / processing unit, etc.
The students will also suggest an alternate cropping plans to the
host farmers. They will also write in brief about their experience with
the host farmer.

RHWE EXTN-471 Extension Education and Rural Sociology - 0+1=1
The student will carry out following extension activities (during RHWE
programme).
1. Conduct of different surveys.
2. Extension programmes.
3. Rural social service activities/programmes

i) RHWE Schedule-1 (EXTN-1): Techno-economic survey of the village.
The student will conduct Techno-economic survey of the village
where he is placed. He will collect data about social, economical,
agricultural, educational, health and other aspects of the village from
different sources viz., A) referring record of Grampanchayat, B.D.O.,
Tahasildar, School, etc, and B) by interviewing Sarpanch, Talathi,
Gramsevak, V.D.O. and Secretary of co-operative society etc.
In addition to this, each student will study minimum five extension
programmes going on I the village in the subject of crop production, poultry,
dairy, sheep, goat, horticulture fisheries, afforestation and other subjects
related to agriculture/horticulture and prepare a report for each of the
extension/development programme in the following format:

The student will collect detail information of two families viz., a) host
farmer and Agril. labour. He will identify the problems of these families and
will suggest solutions to their problems.

d) Organizing Farmer's School:
A group of students placed in the village will identify the problem and
select suitable topic of interest of farmers and prepare themselves for
delivering talk to the farmers/farmwomen at convenient time and place in
the evening. Each student will deliver minimum five talks and prepare a
report on farmer's school activity.
e) Organizing farmers rally and Agril. exhibition:
The students will organize farmers rally and agril. exhibition in the
village for giving information on different subjects of agriculture/horticulture and
related fields. They will take following steps in organizing the rally and agril.
exhibition.
i. Select the topics for the rally based on the needs of the villagers.
ii. Collect enough technical information on the selected topics.
iii. Collect the specimens, samples, models and other materials required for
effective teaching and staging agril. exhibition.
iv. Prepare slides, photographs, charts, posters on the selected topics.
v. Decide the place, date and time of the rally in consultation with villagers.
vi. Chalk out detailed agenda of the rally.
vii. Decide the speakers from amongst the students themselves.
viii. Decide the names of dignitaries, viz., Chief guest, Chairman to be invited for
the rally in consultation with villagers and Officer I/C of Centre/AES/P.O.
and give them a formal invitation.
ix. Decide the names of experts/scientists to be invited as speakers for the rally
and give them formal invitation.
x. Print invitation cards and send them to villagers and dignitaries well in
advance.

xi. Make necessary arrangements for conduct of farmer's rally and also arrange
agril. exhibition on the occasion of the rally.
xii. Start the rally at schedule time.
xiii. Follow the programme of rally in sequence, viz., welcome, lectures by
student/scientists, question answer, speeches of chief guests and chairman
and vote of thanks.
xiv. Give publicity to the farmers rally and agril. exhibition in local newspapers
and also take photographs of the rally. Each students will prepare a report on
the rally in the following format.

Each student will conduct a detail survey of the village and will
identify minimum five important problems of the villagers pertaining to
agriculture, horticulture and allied business. He will prepare a detailed note
on these problems with the help of charts, leaflets, posters, etc.

h) Study of activities of NGOs / Co-operative organizations :
The student will study the development activities under taken by the
different Non Governmental Organizations / Co-operative organizations or
other voluntary organizations in their village or nearby village. They will
prepare a brief report on objectives, area of operation, financial assistance,
programme undertaken, nature of benefit derived by the villagers and
number of beneficiaries. The problems faced by these organizations may
also be included in the report.

The student will study the service co-operative society or agro service
centre functioning in the village or nearby village and will prepare a report
by collecting information in the schedule given below.

A) Preparation of Information Corner :
The student will prepare five charts, five posters, five leaflets and five
folders on village problems, crop production, animal management, plant
protection, post harvest processing, etc. He will display the information
material in the exhibition as well as at the time of group discussion, farmer’s
rally, training class.

The students will prepare a monthly abstract of work done in
Extension Education and Rural Sociology and will submit the same to the
chairman RHWE centre.
Comprehensive Report :

RHWE ECON – 471 Agricultural Economics
The student will conduct socio-economic survey of the village where he is
posted. In addition, he will conduct techno-economic surveys of the host farmer.
The student will also collect data on agricultural/ horticulture business of the host
farmer. From this data, the student will prepares a) A suitable economic
development plan of the village, b) Alternate farm plan of the host farmer or Loan
proposals for the host farmer.
The work of agricultural economics under the RHWE programme will
consist of the following components.
i. Conduct of socio-economic survey of the village and techno-economic
survey of host farmer.
ii. Preparation of alternate farm plan host farmer.
or
iii. Preparation of loan (short, medium and long term) proposal for the host
farmer.
Guideline For Collection Of Data:
The student will utilize following RHWE schedules for collecting the data.
i. RHWE ECON Schedule-1 :- Techno-economic survey of village.
ii. RHWE ECON Schedule-2 :- Techno-economic survey of host farmer.
iii. RHWE ECON Schedule-3 :- Record of daily operations (plot wise) for five
crops.
iv. RHWE ECON Schedule- 4:- Summary of cost of cultivation for five crops.
v. Preparation of bank loan proposals or Preparation of alternate farm plan for host
farmer

vii. Comprehensive Report

i) RHWE ECON Schedule-1-Techno-economic survey of village :
The student will collect statistical data on HORTICULTURE, social,
economic, health, education and communication aspects of the village where he is
posted. He will collect this data from different sources viz., Grampanchayat office,
Talathi, B.D.O., Tahasildar, etc.
From this schedule, the student will prepare a report on economic and
agricultural situation in the village and will give suitable action plan for overall
development of the village economy.

kharif season (land preparation to marketing), by cost accounting method. He will
collect data of preceding seasons i.e., summer and rabi by survey method.
This data forms basis for estimation of per hectare cost of cultivation of
different crops grown by the host farmer and is to be used for preparing alternate
farm plan.

He will collect blank forms of different kinds of loans and prepare bank loan
proposals by filling these forms and attaching relevant documents on behalf of the
host farmers.
Comprehensive Report :
The student will prepare comprehensive report by utilizing the data collected in
RHWE schedules 1 to 4.
The student will indicate the present cropping pattern and animal production
in the village along with their economic returns. Similarly, he will describe
agriculture/horticulture and animal production obtained by the host farmer and its
economic viability.
On the basis of this data, the student will suggest alternate farm plan for the
host farmer wherein he suggest names of remunerative crops for adoption by the
host farmer. He will also indicate the quantum of different types of loans required
by the host farmer.
He will summarize the economic conditions of different categories of the
farmers in the village, marketing problems faced by the farmers, credit availability
and will also suggest action plan for overcoming these problems.

RHWE ENT-471, Integrated Plant Protection-I, Credits 0+2
The student will collect the information about weather record, crop pest
status in the village, pesticide use pattern of the host farmer, seasonal pest
incidence and integrated pest management practices followed by the host farmer
with help of following RHWE schedules ENT 1 to 5:
a. RHWE schedule – 1 (ENT-1): Weather record
b. RHWE schedule – 2 (ENT-2): Seasonal incidence of insect pest.
c. RHWE schedule -3(ENT-3): Pest management practices followed by the
host farmer
d. RHWE schedule - 4(ENT-4): Pesticide use pattern of the host farmer.
e. RHWE schedule - 5(ENT-5): Crop pest status of the major crops of the
village.

e. RHWE Schedule -5 (ENT-5): Crop pest status of the major crops of the
village.
The student will collect the information from farmers on the pest
causing damage to the major crops grown in the village. The classified list of
pests observed should be recorded in the Schedule. They will also collect the
information on different types of plant protection equipments available in
the village and classify them as per the categories mentioned in the
Schedule. The report on the above aspects will be prepared by them.

1. Correlate the occurrence/incidence/outbreak of crop pests with
meteorological data.
2. Awareness of the farmers about pests, pesticides, equipments, their
availability and use.
3. Acquaintance of farmers with identification of pests/parasites/predators etc.
and the plant protection operations undertaken and comment.
4. Difficulties faced by the farmers in managing pest problems.
5. Student's involvement in observation and conduct of plant protection
activities and their observation and analysis pertaining to plant protection
approach of the farmers.
6. Student's suggestions for future improvement of plant protection situation
based on their observation.
Part - B
Besides above the students will undertake following activities/programmes.

h. Preparation of charts
The student will prepare one leaflets on IPM in any horticultural crop.
i. Survey
The student will undertaken a survey on Krishi Seva Kendra/Pesticide
dealers of the village or nearby village in order to know the availability, sale of
pesticide and plant protection appliances etc. in following proforma (Minimum 10
pesticides from different groups) and will write a brief report.
k. Submission of report
The student will prepare and submit a monthly abstract of work done in
integrated pest management to the chairman of RHWE center.

RHWE PATH-471, Integrated Plant Protection-II,
The students will collect the information on weather record, general position
of plant diseases in village, plant disease situation in host farmers field, study the
plant disease diagnostic techniques, availability of fungicides and plant protection
appliances, recycling of organic matter, awareness of farmers about plant
protection measures and plant disease management on host farmer’s fields with the
help of following RHWE schedules; PATH 1 to 8

interval of a fortnight till harvesting. The students will prepare a brief report on
plant disease situation of the village.

student will conduct a method demonstration on improved method of organic
recycling on the host farmer’s field by considering the points in the schedule. The
student will summarize this activity in a brief report.
i) In addition to above, the students will organize and conduct one method
demonstrations on seed treatment, compost making, mushroom cultivation,
preparation of fungicidal solution, application of bio fertilizers, etc. they will
prepare a report on the guidelines given in RHWE EXTN-471.
j) The student will prepare one leaflets /folders on integrated plant disease
management.
k) The student will prepare a plant disease album containing minimum ten
properly preserved disease samples, indicating the following

iv. Place and date of collection.
l) Farmer’s School:
Each student will study the different aspects of integrated plant disease
management and deliver at least one talk to a group of farmers and farm women at
a convenient place and time in the evening. The student will submit a brief report
on the topics covered in the farmer’s school.
m) The student will prepare and submit a monthly abstract of work done on
integrated disease management to the Chairman of RHWE centre.
n) Comprehensive Report:
The student will write a comprehensive report on following points.
i. Crops grown in the village.
ii. Weather parameters and its effect on crop growth and incidence of plant
diseases.
iii. Plant disease situation of the village and estimation of probable losses.
iv. Awareness of the farmer’s about plant diseases.
v. Students assessment about serious plant disease problems and the number of
farmer’s adopting plant protection measures.
vi. Suggestions given by the student for control of plant diseases with special
reference to integrated disease management.

RHWE SSAC-471 Soil Test and Integrated Nutrient Management:
(0+1=1)
The student will collect the information about soil test and integrated
nutrient management aspect by conducting techno-economic survey of village and
host farmer and also by collecting information about the source of manures and
fertilizers, soils testing and organic recycling, etc, with the help of various
schedules given below.
I) RHWE Sch. (SSAC-1) Techno-economic survey of host farmer.
II) RHWE Sch. (SSAC-2) Preparation of soil test report for vegetables and
fertilizer recommendation.
III) RHWE Sch. (SSAC-3) Preparation of soil test report for fruit crops and
comment on suitability of land.
IV) Comprehensive Report

The detailed guidelines regarding collecting information with the help

I) RHWE Sch. (SSAC-1) Techno-economic survey of host farmer.
Every student will collect the information on assets i.e. land, its, irrigation,
and use of inorganic fertilizers and the information on point nos. 3 to 8 given in the
schedule from the host farmer by making frequent visits to the host farmer and his
farm. They will collect data for current kharif season, preceding summer and rabi
seasons. The data so collected will be analyzed and interpreted for judging the
fertility status of soils and status of integrated nutrient management by the host
farmer. The student will prepare a brief report on these aspects.
II) RHWE Sch. (SSAC-2) Preparation of soil test report for vegetables and
fertilizer recommendation.
Students will collect one surface soil sample (depth 22.5 cm) by ‘V’ notch
and one profile sample from the fields of the host farmer and other farmers of the
village and will analyze immediately within the first fortnight form the inception of
RHWE programme. They will interpret the analytical data of soil samples, as per
the six tier system and will give the recommendations to the individual farmers.
The students will also compare the fertilizers used by the farmer’s with the
recommended doses and will comment on excess or deficit use of fertilizers by the
farmer’s in the report.
III) RHWE Sch. (SSAC-3) Preparation of soil test report for fruit crops and
comment on suitability of land.
Students will collect one profile sample from the fields of the host farmer and other
farmers of the village and will analyze immediately within the first fortnight form
the inception of RHWE programme and students will comment on the suitability of
land for horticultural fruit crops.

Comprehensive Report :
The student will prepare a comprehensive report by utilizing the data from
various SSAC RHWE schedules on following points.
i. Host farmer’s soil classification, fertilizer recommendation, irrigation water
sources, adoption of integrated nutrient management and soil testing by the
host farmers. Awareness of host farmer regarding soil testing services,
organic recycling-present position, chances to improve and proposed
planning.
ii. Plot wise information regarding soil test reports, recommendations. Impact
of farmer’s school,
iii. Efforts made to popularize integrated nutrient management
practices,Targeted approach in farming and constraints faced.
Activities/ Vision :
1)Farmers school on Targeted yield approach for one horticultural crop (Onion,
Okra, Brinjal, Merigold and Banana)
Students will study the various aspects of Targeted yield approach for different
horticultural crops given in krishi darshani and deliver talks to a group of farmers
and farm women at the convenient place and time in the evening.
They will submit a brief report on the topics covered by them in farmers school
with the reactions of the farmers.

4.2.3 Every student undergoing RHWE programme will prepare a separate file for
each course. These files will contain both the subcomponents of a course to be
evaluated by the SMS's and the Advisory Committee Members.
The files should be submitted by the students to the Chairman of the RHWE
centre bearing completion certified signed by the AES/P.O. and the Chairman of
the Advisory Committee of the RHWE centre. They will also submit a separate file
containing twenty weekly diaries duly evaluated by the Chairman Advisory
Committee.
4.2.4 The Advisory Committee will conduct the final examination of RHWE
students at respective RHWE centers, for the subcomponents of RHWE courses
assigned to them.
4.2.5 Office of the Associate Dean of the college will collect the files from
concerned RHWE centers with the help of AES/P.O. and hand over for evaluation
to the concern SMS.

4.2.6 Finalization of Results
After receipt of marks from the Advisory Committee and SMS, the
marks obtained by each student will be recorded by the Associate Dean's office and
result will be prepared at the college level.

• Every student should compulsory one week attach / visit to each (GOVT./
ICAR /NRC/SAU ) - KVK, RARS, AGRI. COLLEGE, NGOs, BANK etc. ( Two
compulsory ) institute.
• They should take actual participation of various ongoing activities of visiting
institute.
