The above staff is following the 4 time signature. Notice that the staff is composed
of four measures. Each measure comprised of two quarter notes which receives 1 beat each. In the
other measure, there are four eight notes because 2 eight notes are equal to 1 quarter note. One half
note can also be used in one measure, it will receive two beats (Pousca, A. & Aichele, M., nd).

The above staff is following the time signature. The staff above is composed of four measures.
Each measure need to comprise three quarter notes which receives 1 beat each. However, there are also
other ways to complete a measure for this time signature. First is having two quarter rests and one
quarter note in one measure. Another is to combine one half note and one quarter note, four eight notes
and one quarter note could also be done or one half note and two eight notes (Pousca, A. & Aichele, M.,

The above staff is following the time signature. The staff above is composed of six measures.
Each measure need to comprise six eight notes which receives 1 beat each. However, there are also
other ways to complete a measure for this time signature. First is a dotted quarter note and three eight
notes. Another is to combine one quarter note, two eight notes, 1 sixteenth note, & one dotted eight
note. Next is to combine two sixteenth notes & one dotted quarter note. A dotted half note is also equal

What you need to know?

In musical scores, we organize the music into “bars” or “measures.” A “bar,” also
known as a measure, “measure” is where the five horizontal lines of a staff are intersected
vertically with another line, indicating a separation:

Each measure has a specific number of notes allowed to be placed in it, and that number of notes
is dependent upon the time signature (Aichele, M., nd).
The most common notes which are used to make the short and long rhythms in the various meters
are included in the chart below, beginning with the longest held notes and going to the shortest. The
chart below also mentions the length relationship between the note values. (Aichele, M., nd).
A time signature of 2/4 means count 2 quarter notes
to each bar. This is an often-used time signature. You
count the beats: 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 and so on…
A time signature of 3/4 means count 3 quarter notes
to each bar. This is an often-used time signature. You
count the beats: 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3 and so on…
A time signature of 6/8 means count 6 eighth notes
to each bar. This is also a very often-used time signature.
You count the beats: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and
so on… (Pousca, A., nd).

What you need

to know?

Every song follows a

time signature in terms of using
different kinds of notes & rests to
be included in each measure.
These musical symbols on a staff
designate when to play and
when not to play music or
sing parts of a song.
Aside from the notes and rests,
a musical staff also uses other
symbols such horizontal lines
