REQUIREMENTS
Dr. D. Lambert & Mr. E. La Vita - (S3 MEK FINAL SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT)
S3: Marine Engineering: Final Integrated Summative Assessment
This open-book research project (assessment) is to be as original and creative as possible, typed, and
in your own words. ALL sketches are to be neatly done by hand with a ruler. Marks will be given for
layout, originality, quality of information provided - and for the correctness of the work
(marked as per the accompanying rubric – final page).
Any copied or plagiarised work will be penalised severely. Work will be submitted for a plagiarism
check to determine % of original content. Please use suitable referencing (examples provided).
* A cover (1 page)
* A comprehensive sketch (+/- 1 page)
* 4 pages of written content (+/- 3-4 pages)
* A reference list (1 page)
Size requirements: Crew complement: 20, Engine power: 4,500 HP (Reversible - Single Screw)
Your company is thinking about building a trading vessel (along the lines of the image above) and have
asked for input from senior members of their staff as to what should be integrated into the design.
Sketch the system(s) as described below, and accompany your sketch(es) with 3 to 4 pages of typed
content (per subject) to describe your subject sketch.
• Your vessel is to have a 380 volt, 50 Hz distribution network, with three diesel driven generating
sets, supplying a split switchboard arrangement.
• Your vessel is also to incorporate a shaft driven alternator driven from the main engine as an
additional power source.
• Your vessel will be required to dock when trading between ports in countries that supply both
50Hz and 60Hz frequency ranges.
• Your vessel is to have a self-contained emergency generator fitted as part of the design (in line
with SOLAS requirements).
• Your vessel is to have 2 sets of emergency batteries for as a source of emergency power.
Design an original electrical distribution layout for the vessel, and include the following on your diagram
and description:
• The schematic showing the layout of your proposed network on a single page.
• All of the protective devices you are required to install in order to protect the network.
• The description is to motivate your choice of design, and why you have selected the various
components for your proposed electrical distribution network.
Steam: Answer only if you have registered for ICN200S or ICN201S
• Your vessel is to have the main engine running on heavy fuel, with storage of heavy fuel being
in 4 double bottom tanks, as well as the usual heating and purification arrangements being fitted
to ensure use of heavy fuel as a fuel source.
• The feed pump for your auxiliary steam system is to be steam-turbine driven when steam
pressure becomes available.
• You need to ensure that all aspects of your system are designed to minimise contamination of
the feed system, as well as preventing pollution of the environment in the event of any
contamination of the feed system.
• You need to incorporate all of the safety and operational devices as found on a modern auxiliary
steam system.
Design an original auxiliary steam system for the vessel, and include the following on your diagram and
description:
• The schematic showing the layout of your proposed auxiliary steam system on a single page.
• All of the protective and safety devices you are required to install in order to comply with
MARPOL and SOLAS requirements.
• The description is to motivate your choice of design and the working pressure you have
selected, and how your system is able to ensure that (a) contamination is prevented as much as
possible, (b) how chemical dosing is carried out, and (c) the basic inspections and maintenance
requirements of your selected system.
• Your main engine is to be a common rail type, making use of an electronic governor.
• Your main engine is to have a multiple speed range, necessitating the use of either a staged or
sequential turbocharging system (your choice).
• Your engine is to incorporate an emissions control arrangement (your choice) in order to ensure
compliance with MEPC standards.
Design an original common rail fuel system arrangement for the vessel, and include the following on
your diagram and/or description:
• How the electronic governor will be integrated into the system in order to regulate the fuel
supply.
• How the speed, direction monitoring and crank-position sensors are integrated into your design.
• How your selected turbocharging arrangement operates.
• Your choice of emissions control reduction method you have selected, and the reasoning
behind your choice.
Dr. D. Lambert & Mr. E. La Vita - (S3 MEK FINAL SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT)
General: Answer only if you have registered for SWK201S
In line with the crewing complement and engine rating as described on Page 2 you are required to
include in your proposal, designs for any two of the following systems. Each of the proposed
systems below carry equal weighting of 50 marks.
NB: Choose any two of the topics that follow for your answers
Topic 1:
Propose a suitable Domestic Refrigeration system to accommodate the requirements of the crewing
complement. The design must not exceed THREE pages including the schematic and must:
• Have a hand drawn layout/schematic of the proposed system. Indicate on a suitable table the
relevant temperatures and pressures applicable to the refrigerant used.
• Explain how PID control is applied in the system and how failure of either of the components
(i.e. proportional, integral or derivative) affects the system operation.
• Include a reference to all applicable Acts and regulations pertaining to safety and environment.
Topic 2:
Propose a suitable Machinery Space Fire Detection System for the vessel. The system must not
exceed THREE pages including the schematic and must:
Topic 3:
Propose a suitable Potable/Domestic water plant to adequately meet the needs of the Crew, Boiler
and Engine cooling system. The proposal must not exceed THREE pages including the schematic of
the FWG / RO plant and must specify:
• The type of system i.e. FWG, RO etc, motivated by suitable data, evidence and materials list.
• A hand drawn layout/schematic of the proposed system.
• A table of production and consumption estimates.
• Operating instructions, proposed maintenance schedule and list of possible faults and remedies.
Topic 4:
Propose a suitable Oil and Sewage Recovery system(s) in line with ALL regulatory requirements. The
proposal must not exceed FOUR pages including schematics of both systems and must:
Marks will be allocated as specified below per section and allocated in terms of the rubric for each
section
