2 Safety
This section provides an overview of all important safety aspects for
the optimal protection of personnel and for safe and fault-free
operation.
Non-observance of the work instructions and safety instructions
mentioned in this manual can result in extensive damage.
2.1 Intended use
The plant is designed and constructed exclusively for the intended use
described here.
KTG crane cab coolers from the Standard series should be used
exclusively to air condition crane girders, crane cabs and control
stands (electric, hydraulic). They are specially designed for use
in high-temperature facilities with hot ambient air. Depending on
their intended purpose, KTGs fulfil the functions of cooling, dehu-
midifying, filtering airborne particles and heating, via a circulation
process. In the Standard series, the air is directed through a
system of ducts.
If the split-type KTG unit is used the duct system will not be
needed as the exhaust air is taken by the evaporator fan directly
out of the room to be cooled and then the air - after having been
cooled down – is again blown into the room.

Crane cab cooler
Brief description KTG crane cab coolers from the Standard series should be used to air
condition crane girders, crane cabs and control stands. In the process,
the accruing heat is released into the ambient air. The cooling
and simultaneous drying of process air by passing below the dew
point takes place through an evaporator with a refrigerant
compression circuit.

4.2 Overview
4.2.1 Air circulation filter
The air filter (circulating air) has a cartridge design and consists
of a cardboard frame with glass-fibre matting as a filter medium.
The matting, which is folded in a zig-zag pattern, is also reinforced
on the clean air side by a wide-meshed metal supporting grid.
4.2.2 Evaporator

4.2.8 Compressor
The compressor condenses the gas-forming refrigerant. Depending
on the refrigeration capacity and the refrigerant, it is installed in
a semi-hermetic or fully-hermetic design. If an oil pump is integrated
into the compressor for the oil supply, an oil pressure switch must be
installed. The oil sump heater fitted in the oil pan guarantees
the lubrication properties of the oil after long periods of downtime.
It prevents concentration of the refrigerant in the oil.
34

1. Check the plant daily for possible damages, leaks and unusual
operating noises.
8.3.2 Check refrigerant fill level
2. Perform visual inspection at the sight glass (Fig. 19/1) in the fluid
line.
Refrigerant flow is continuous and without bubbles: sufficient
refrigerant quantity.
Refrigerant flow with bubbles: Insufficient refrigerant quantity
or very dirty filter dryer (contact customer service, see page 2
for contact information).
58
Crane cab cooler
Maintenance
1. Switch off the plant and secure against restarting ( Chapter 2.7
"Securing against restarting" on page 23).
2. Sweep off rough accumulations of dirt from the fins with a hand
brush (Fig. 20/1).
NOTE!
Property damage from improper cleaning!
1
The fins can bend from the air flow and the condenser
loses refrigeration capacity.
- Never place a compressed air gun at an angle
against the fins. Always blow out in the direction
of flow.
Fig. 20: Condenser fins
- Do not use high-pressure cleaners or high-pressure
steam cleaners.
- Only clean in the air intake area with cleansers
and low pressure.
- Protect the fan from spray water.
3. Carefully blow off the fins with compressed air. In the process,
always blow on the fins vertically.
CAUTION!
The fins are sharp!

holder (Fig. 23/5) and open the filter frame (Fig. 23/6).
1 1
Fig. 21: Opening the isolated door 4) Screw out the air filter (Fig. 24/7) and check for soiling.
If necessary, clean the filter by blowing it out or if the
soiling is too heavy, replace the air filter. Dispose of the
4 air filter in accordance with the applicable local
environmental regulations.
8
8) Insert the isolated door (Fig. 21/3) on to the evaporator
unit with the four latches (Fig. 21/1) and fasten in place.

Faults
9 Faults
Possible causes for faults and the measures for their rectification are
described in the following chapter.
If faults occur repeatedly, shorten the maintenance intervals
in accordance with the actual load.
For faults which cannot be remedied through the following
instructions, contact the manufacturer; see service address
on page 2.
9.1 Safety

Fan
WARNING!
Risk of injury from rotating parts!
Rotating parts in the fan can cause severe injuries.
- Observe the after-run time: Before opening coverings,
make sure that no components are still moving.
- Before any work on moving components of the fan,
switch off the plant and secure against restarting.
Wait until all components have come to a stop.

2 Collective faults
The "Collective fault" indicator lamp (Fig. 28/2 and Fig. 29/2)
illuminates for pending fault messages.

Faults
A high-pressure fault manifests itself when the plant cannot release the accruing heat to the environment.
With an air-cooled condenser, it is possible that the condenser is dirty, the overall airflow is hindered,
or the ambient temperature is too high; however, the condenser fans may also be defective.
With a water-cooled plant it is possible that the cooling water flow is hindered, a valve does not open,
a cooling water pump is defective, or even that the cooling water is too warm.
High-pressure fault Dirty condenser Clean c ondenser ( Chapter 8.3.3 “ Expert personnel
Clean condenser"
on page 58)
Refrigerant deficiency
In case of a potential leak, in which case the refrigerant does not expand promptly, a state in which the air
cooler freezes may arise.
Air circulation filter soiled Clean air circulation filter, Expert personnel
replace as necessary (
Chapter 8.3.4 "Replace
air circulation filter" on
page 59)
A low-pressure fault also manifests itself in the hindering of the air flow of an air cooler. It can freeze, may
be dirty or the air flow may be hindered in general. A fan can also be defective in this case.
A low-pressure fault may also be present with refrigerant loss or a defective injector valve.

10.1 Disassembly
Before beginning the disassembly:
Shut down the plant and secure against restarting.
Physically disconnect all sources of energy supply from the plant
and release stored residual energies.
Remove operating and auxiliary materials and residual process
materials and dispose of them in an environmentally-friendly
manner.
Then clean assemblies and components properly and disassemble
them in observance of the valid local work safety and environmental
protection regulations.
10.2 Disposal
Insofar as no agreement on disposal or the return of goods has been
made, deliver disassembled components for recycling as follows:
Take metal parts in for scrapping.
Take plastic elements for recycling.
Sort and dispose of all remaining components according to their
material composition.
NOTE!
Danger for the environment through improper
disposal!
Improper disposal can lead to environmental hazards.
- Take electrical scrap, electronic components, lubri-
cants and other auxiliary materials to an authorised special-
ist company for disposal.
- In case of doubt obtain information about
environmentally-friendly disposal from your local
authority or specialist disposal companies.
