Answer ALL the Questions (5  10 = 50 Marks)

1. (a) Find an equation for the line perpendicular to the tangent to the curve
4𝑥 8
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 +1 at the point (2, 5 ). [4M]
𝑑𝑦
(b) Find 𝑑𝑥 if sin 𝑦 + 𝑥 2 𝑦 3 − cos 𝑥 = 2𝑦. [3M]

(c) Does the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑥 3 have a vertical tangent at the origin ? Give
reasons for your answer. [3M]
2. (a) Verify Rolle's theorem for 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝑥, 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 𝜋. [3M]
(b) The function 𝑓 has first and second derivatives as follows:
𝑥+3 (𝑥−1) 2−6𝑥
𝑓′ 𝑥 = and 𝑓 ′′ 𝑥 = (𝑥−2)3 . [7M]
(𝑥−2)2
