Venice is a romantic city which is in the Veneto region of Italy. Venice was built in the Adriatic Sea on
100 small islands. Venice uses canals and waterways instead of roads. It is as though the city floats
on water. It does not have any roads.

It is a unique city that holds a rich history and priceless art. This city was built on a lagoon as a
defence to escape from invaders.

Venice is a favourite when it comes to tourists. It is romantic and beautiful and can be explored in a

1. St. Mark’s Basilica

St marks basilica is one of the most famous and celebrated buildings in Venice. It is a very
important religious building and was created in 1092. The church is unbelievably beautiful, from
its architecture to the sculptures, art, the ornate fresco and the Byzantine works of art. It is
located in the Piazza San Marco and is easy to access through the Grand Canal. It is one of the
best examples of Byazantine architecture.

2. St. Mark’s Square

St Marks square is a very popular piazza. It is a very important piazza and is a must visit. It is
located opposite to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore opposite to the grand canal. The piazza is
surrounded by beautiful buildings.

3. Grand Canal

The largest canal that connects the islands is the Canale Grande or the grand canal. It is like a
large river that cuts through Venice in half. It is in an S shape through the centre. There are
around 200 buildings that are on the banks of this canal that are as old as from the 13 th century.
It has four bridges that people and tourists use. These bridges are used to travel along it.

Walking along the canal is suggested thing to do to admire the water and the buildings.

4. Doges palace

It is one of the most popular buildings in Venice. It is in St marks square. It looks over to the
grand canal. It is a very beautiful building and consists of a beautiful arch made of white stones
in a diamond shape. Inside there are ornate furniture and artwork. It is advised to explore the
interiors as well as the exteriors.

5. San Marco Campanile

The San Marco Campanile is the tallest building in Venice. It stands at 98.6m in height. The
building was reconstructed after it collapsed in 1902. It was used as a watch tower when it was
originally built. Its is made of a simple red brick design. It has a bell and on top of it there’s a
statue of the angel Gabriel. At the top of the tower you’ll be able to see a view of Venice.
