OBJECTIVES:
The course will enable students to learn about the various types of rocks and their origin/distribution.

COURSE CONTENT / SYLLABUS

Rocks as natural mineral aggregates, types of rocks and concept of rock cycle. Magma- definition,
composition, types and origin. Major forms and structures of igneous rocks. Basic classification of
UNIT-I igneous rocks. Ideas about diversity in igneous rocks – differentiation and assimilation, Bowen’s 15 hrs.
reaction series. Occurrences of Granite, Granodiorite, Rhyolite, Syenite, Nepheline syenite,
Phonolite, Diorite, Gabbro, Basalts, Carbonatites in India.

Processes of formation of sedimentary rocks. Clastic and non-clastic types of sedimentary rocks,

OBJECTIVES: The course will enable students to learn about the geomorphological and structural features and their
importance in landscape development.

COURSE CONTENT / SYLLABUS

Definition and types of deformation in rocks, planer and linear structures, attitudes of planer and

Petrology: Study of common igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks in hand specimen.
