ASSIGNMENT 1: SITUATION ANALYSIS (SWOT OR SIMILAR) INCLUDING A STAKEHOLDER ANALYSIS AND


DISCUSSION OF THE ANALYSIS (SEE MARKING RUBRIC AT BACK OF TOPIC BOOKLET)

The analysis helps you determine what is happening within your organization, and in terms of your
organization’s environment. The items below relate to what can be considered for inclusion in your
analysis. Note: 3 pages for your SWOT (or similar) and 2 pages discussing the implications of your
analysis for strategic planning making an assignment of 5 pages in total.

 An informative background of the organization is provided.


 Major stakeholders are identified, and their power and influence on the organization are
identified. Stakeholder Analysis
 The (likely) impact of societal trends and events on the organization is categorized and outlined.
Society
 The (likely) impact of political trends and events on the organization is categorized and noted.
Politics
 The (likely) impact of developing and existing technologies is categorized and noted. Technology
 The (likely) impact of economic events and trends is categorized and noted. Economics
 The (likely) impact of the organization’s geographic situation is categorized and noted.
Geographic
 The (likely) effect of the organization’s culture is evaluated in terms of achievement of future
strategic goals.
 The effect of the organization’s structure (e.g. authority structures, levels of hierarchy within the
organization, power networks etc.) is evaluated in terms of achievement of future strategic
goals is outlined.
 The effectiveness of the organization’s leaders is evaluated in terms of achieving future strategic
goals.
 The effectiveness of the organization’s leaders is evaluated in terms of achieving future strategic
goals.
 The climate of the organization is evaluated in terms of achievement of future strategic goals.
 The technology of the organization is evaluated in terms of achievement of future strategic
goals.
 The financial, staff and other resources of the organization are evaluated in terms of
achievement of future strategic goals.
 Any organizational core competency or capability is noted and categorized.
 Any organizational rigidity is noted and categorized.
 Enough details are provided re the above items so that the lecturer understands the
ramifications of each.
 The discussion section (2 pages) considers implications for strategic planning based upon the
SWOT (or similar) analysis
 The APA style of referencing is used.
