Getting Started

- To get started, the only installation needed is the Mental Ray for 3ds Max 2018 installer

The plugin is free to use within 3ds Max for single frame or sequence renders.

- To install the plugin, run Mental-Ray-3ds-Max-2018-WIN-1.0.1.exe

- Purchase and installation of a Mental Ray for 3ds Max license is needed for rendering animations
outside of

the 3ds Max 2018 user interface. Details can be found at


https://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia-mental-ray-products.html

- Installation of the Mental Ray Standalone is used for rendering .mi files from command line.

Satellite rendering (distributed bucket rendering) across networked machines is also


possible with Standalone.

- To install Standalone, run Mental-Ray-Standalone-3ds-Max-2018-WIN-1.0.1.exe

- Documentation on how to use the plugin and Mental Ray can be found in your installation
directory under docs.

Both html-based and PDF formats are available.

- Documents are available for help in how to get a license and setup licensing software:

These can also be found via the Start menu.

- Please note that the name of the executable file to run the NVIDIA Professional Application
Center (NVPAC) is called IrayLM

(e.g.IrayLM.exe)

- Please note that licensing is managed through both NVIDIA products and Flexera Software
products. Throughout the documentation,

a "Flexera account" and "NVIDIA Software Licensing Center account" are used
interchangeably. The version number of lmadmin is

erroneous in the documentation.

typically:
