Statement Marks

Q1 Starting with the assumption made in theory of simple bending, derive an expression for the 10
following bending equation with usual notations;

Q2 A hollow shaft, having an inside diameter 60 % of its outer diameter, is to replace a solid 10
shaft transmitting same power at same speed. Calculate the percentage saving in material, if
the material to be used is also the same.
Q3 A thin cylinder tube 80 mm internal diameter and 5 mm thick, is closed at the ends and is 10
subjected to an internal pressure of 6 N/mm 2. A torque of 2009600 N-mm is also applied to
the tube. Find the hoop stress, longitudinal stress; maximum and minimum principal stresses
and maximum shear stress.
Q4 Starting thereon all the important values of shear force and bending moment, construct the 10
shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam loaded as shown in figure.
State the position of points of inflexion on the beam if any.

Q5 A steel bar of cross section given in the figure below is subjected to a shear force of 15 kN. 15
Plot the shear stress distribution of the section indicating principal values.
Q6 A beam AB 5 m long supported on two intermediate supports 3 m apart carries a uniformly 15
distributed load of 0.6 kN/m. The beam also carries two concentrated loads of 3 kN at left
hand end A, and 5 kN at the right hand end B as shown in figure below.

If the reactions at support are equal, compute the Slop and defection at points A and B.

Q. 7 At a point in a bracket, the stress on two mutually perpendicular planes are 80 N/mm 2 15
(tensile) and 40 N/mm2 (compressive). The shear stress across the planes is 50 N/mm 2. Find
using Mohr stress circle or otherwise calculate:
a. Magnitude and direction of the resultant stress on plane making an angle of 15 0 with
the plane of the first stress.
b. Maximum shear stress and location of its plane.
c. Principal stresses and the location of principal planes.
Q8 Calculate the crippling stress, using Euler’s formula for a pin-ended 2 m long strut consisting 15
of a tube of 7.5 cm outside diameter and 2.5 cm wall thickness.
In compression test, a short length of this tube failed at a load of 315 kN and when tested as
a strut with rounded ends, 2 m long, it failed at 174 kN. Find from these data the value of the
constant in the Rankine’s formula. Take Young’s modulus =20 MN/cm2.
