Course: Language and Culture 551036

Ibagué/2020
Introduction

On this page, we will find about Unit 1 and Unit 2 of the course Language and Culture. A
subject very interesting where I learned about the relationship between culture and
language, which is a very tight relation because without culture a person cannot learn
his/her own language. First, language expresses cultural reality (with words people express
facts and ideas but also reflect their attitudes). Second, language embodies cultural reality
(people give meaning to their experience through the means of communication). And
finally, language symbolizes cultural reality (people view their language as a symbol of
their social identity).

Conclusions - Importance of the course Language and Culture

Through this course I have noticed, the circumstances in which culture plays a
fundamental role in teaching a foreign language, I cannot pretend to teach a language
ignoring the cultural context of that language, students are expected to learn information
about a country or people, their lives, their history, their institutions, or their customs or
about the cultural icons these people have produced, such as their literature, their art, their
architecture, or their music. Thus, to support the intercultural learning process, foreign
language teachers need additional knowledge, attitudes, competencies, and skills. They
need to be acquainted with basic insights from cultural anthropology, culture learning
theory, and intercultural communication and need to be willing to teach intercultural
competence and know-how to do so (Edelhoff, 1993; Willems, 2002).
