Abstract

The organizations are, in the present scenario, following strategies for reducing stress
among employees, for making them feel stress free. This will surely enable the employees to
perform better and in return this would increase the ROI of the organization. The main aim of
this paper is to examine the relationship among factors that lead to job stress. Efforts are also
taken to identify the impact of ob stress on the performance of employees. The data of the study
was collected in Cuddalore. The main tool for primary data collection was a questionnaire.
Simple random sampling was adopted for this study. A total of 100 questionnaires were collected
for the study. Work performance is predicted by stress. This is the final result of the study; it was
found that six items did not predict employee’s work performance. Further it was found that
nearly 58% of the factors of stress had their influence on employee’s work performance.

INTRODUCTION

Intense competitions are prevailing among the companies to be better than the other in
today’s business world. The success of any company is possible only through the element named
employee performance. If an employee performs to his best, it would definitely lead to
organizational success. The performance of the employees gets obstructed by extreme level of
stress faced at the workplace. This condition had made many employers to follow effective
strategies for reducing the employee stress, thereby enhancing their productivity. For ensuring
success of the organization and to make the organization run smoothly without any hindrances, it
is important for the organization to be aware of the factors that create work stress in employees.

JOB STRESS

The reaction of employees towards any stimuli of the environment is referred to as stress.
Stress in job is seen to be more obvious in workplace in the current world of competition. It also
leads to low morale among the employees. Changes in technology, changing life styles and
some social factors are responsible for stress among the employees. Stress in job can be either
productive or may be non productive. Stress is productive when it helps the employees to
perform well through motivation.

It helps the employees to explore new opportunities and increase their productivity.
Stress proves to be counter- productive when the employees are forced by external stimuli to
perform better, but the results will not be satisfactory. Stress can be seen as a part of employee’s
life and it has an influence on their performance. Heavy workload, low pay, insufficient
incentives, lack of motivation and recognition are the factors of stress which has an impact on
the productivity of employees. Mäki et al. (2008) had analyzed, in their research named “Work
stress and new onset migraine in a female employee population”, the problems created on health
due to stress. The authors confirmed that heavy stress at work leas to creation of migraine among
the female employees. The performance in job is affected by stress factors like;

 Heavy burden due to work

 Security in job
 Work autonomy
 Conflicts in role
 Shift in work timings
 Low pay
 Change in technology
 Employee’s low morale
 Lack of sufficient recognition

EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE

All the entities carry out their work and operations with eh help oh equipments,
materials, money and manpower. The main element of an organization is the manpower, that is,
the employees at work. The human resource is a live resource and serves to be the most
important component of any organization when compared with other forms of resource.
Performances are generally categorized as organizational performance and employee
performance. The employee performance has an impact on the organizational performance.

OBJECTIVES

The main aim of this paper is to examine the relationship among factors that lead to job
stress. Efforts are also taken to identify the impact of ob stress on the performance of employees.

REVIEW

Mathangi Vijayan (2017) had studied the effect of job stress on the performance of
employees. The research was carried out among the employees of Aavin in Coimbatore. Stress
at the work area turns to be the root cause of low performance among the employees. For
overcoming this stress, the employees need to be motivated. The current paper had made a focus
on the main factors that causes stress. It also described the way in which job stress affects the
performance of the employees of Aavin in Coimbatore. The main stress factors considered in this
research were job security, shift work and workload. Efforts were taken in this paper to identify
the strategies that have to be adopted by the organization as well as the employees to reduce
stress and to enhance their productivity. The results of the study reported that the management of
the organization can also offer meditational programs, bonus and incentives and counseling for
the employees to increase the performance of the employees.

Sharmilee Bala Murali , Abdul Basit, Zubair Hassan (2018) had made a study, whose
main aim was to examine the effect of stress at work on performance of the employees. Data was
collected by adopting a casual research design. The workers of various sections were selected
for the study. Data was collected through a questionnaire consisting of 26 items of Likert scale.
Before the circulation of the questionnaire through social media, its validity and reliability were
checked. The sample population consisted of 310 employees of several sectors in Malaysia. The
technique of convenient sampling was adopted to select the sample. Among the total sample,
only 136 questionnaires were received back. The analysis using regression with the use of
SPSS21was performed to analyze the data. The findings of the study showed that role ambiguity
and time pressure had an important effect on the job performance of the employees.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The data of the study was collected in Cuddalore. The main tool for primary data
collection was a questionnaire. Simple random sampling was adopted for this study. A total of
100 questionnaires were collected for the study. The primary data was used to check the effect of
stress on the work performance. The data also used qualitative data which was collected through
articles, research papers and observations.
The data for the study was analyzed to check the relation using regression analysis
calculated through SPSS. The data was scored to facilitate the author to identify the impact of the
independent variable on the dependent variable. A scale with 13 items developed by Mäki et al.

a Dependent Variable: work performance

This table offers the multiple correlation (r = .763), the multiple correlation squared
(r² = .583), the adjusted multiple correlation squared (adj.r² = .578), and the standard error of the
estimate. The multiple correlations are the combined correlation of every predictor with the
conclusion. The multiple correlations squared denote the degree of variance in the outcome
which is reported for by the predictors; here, 58.3% of the variance regarding work performance
is accounted for by statements of stress. Hence, the adjusted r² is suitable. The table designates
that the model's r² is significantly dissimilar from zero, f =142.341, p < 0 .000, which explains
that there is significant connection among stress and work performance.

CONCLUSION

The most valuable and important resource of any organization is the human resource.
Only with the efforts of skilled employees, the organizations can run smoothly and exceed their
competitors. In short, the employees are the only source of success for an organization. It is the
duty of the organizations to provide a stress free environment for the employees to make them
perform better. Extreme level of work related stress will lead to adverse effects on the

productivity of employees. The management of the organization has to see to the fact that the
employees are offered situations in work which are stress free and quite without any conflict.

The performance and motivation of the employees can be strengthened through the
growth opportunities which are clearly defined. Absence of growth opportunities leads to de-
motivation which subsequently affects their performance or productivity. It is also an important
step to increase the number of employees working in a branch in order to avoid the stress due to
heavy workload. Further, the employees should not be made to work for excessive time. They
should be allowed to go home after their regular working time.

Work performance is predicted by stress. This is the final result of the study; it was found
that six items did not predict employee’s work performance. Further it was found that nearly
58% of the factors of stress had their influence on employee’s work performance.
