Parting is an operation of slicing the work piece or cutting off a part of the workpiece to produce

a desired length and shape at the end of the workpiece. Parting operation is performed on the
lathe machine using a single point cutting tool whose shape is specially ground for this operation.
The tool is held perpendicular to the axis of the workpiece. The process involves penetration of
the parting tool into the surface of the workpiece with the help of the cross slide. The workpiece
is rotated at half the speed required for turning and the feed varies from 0.07-0.15 per revolution.
The maximum depth of cut that can be given is equal to the width of the tool. For parting a large
circumference, a number of cuts are used
In this operation the part of the workpiece is removed up to some specified. And the finished one
is removed with the help of cutting blade . It can also be used for the removal of bolt head
1. Parting
Parting is a metal cutting process in which a component of the workpiece is removed using
a cutting tool called parting tool. The removed part can be finished part of the parent
stock. For removing the bolt’s head, parting is used

Procedure
 Before the operation, place the workpiece in the chuck and fix it tightly. Adjust the
position of the workpiece and cutting tool holder along the centerline.
 Lock the carriage so the tool post remains parallel to axis of machine during the operation
without any disruption.
 The feed rate should be kept under check to prevent any kind of chatter. It varies from
0.07-0.15 per cycle and the cut depth depends upon the thickness of tool.
 Maintain a slow and steady speed as parting is done at slower speed usually 200-300
RPM.
 Position the parting tool and switch on the lathe machine.
 Advance the cross-slide until the contact is made between tool and workpiece. Keep
advancing until metal starts to remove with curling chips. Use cutting fluids for
assistance.
 Cuts are made in stages instead of in a single attempt. Be careful at the final stage of cut.
If the workpiece extends the chuck at large distance then there is a possibility of it
swinging at dangerous arc.
 When the workpiece starts to move, slow down the speed and just remove the workpiece
by hand moving back and forth.
