NAJWA SHIHAB

Najwa Shihab commonly called Nana is a television news anchor and reporter.
Nana was born on September 16, 1977, in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Nana
continued the study in the law faculty of the Indonesian University. Although she
studied law, she prefers a career as journalists, because the moment of study at the
television station can change Najwa's life plans and ideals.

In 2004, Najwa was an assistant producer in the TV show. At the end of the
year, there was a tsunami in Aceh. Initially, the team was only asked to bring up the
conversation about the terrible incident. However, Najwa chose to go directly to the
field. Najwa moved quickly. She contacted several friends, looking for a plane that
could be boarded because all flights were stopped. Finally, she heard that Mr. Jusuf
Kalla, the Vice President at that time, would depart for Aceh on December 27, 2004.

She also called Jusuf Kalla's secretary so that Najwa and his team could join
the group. "Good evening, I'm Najwa as a Metro TV reporter. I get information that
Mr.Jusuf Kalla will fly to Aceh tomorrow morning. Is it true?" said Najwa. "Good evening
too. Yes, true. Can I help you?" asked Jusuf Kalla's Secretary. "The team and I want to
report conditions in Aceh but all commercial flights were canceled. So, I want to ask for
help, Mr. Jusuf Kalla to be allowed to board the plane with Aceh," answered Najwa.
Jusuf Kalla's Secretary said, "Ms. Najwa, you and the team are allowed to go to Aceh.
We will leave Monday morning." Najwa replied, “Fine, thank you Ms."

The next day, Najwa and the team joined Mr. Jusuf Kalla's flight. The plane
landed in the military airfield. When landing, Najwa and the team were picked up by an
old truck. On the way, Najwa asked Mr. Jusuf Kalla, “Can you tell me the beginning of
the news Mr?” Mr. Jusuf Kalla answered, “At that time I got a report that there was an
earthquake in Aceh.” “How many victims at that time?” ask Najwa. “Approximately
5,000”, replied Jusuf Kalla. “I think it was just an ordinary earthquake, so yesterday I
only sent people to coordinate. It turned out that the night I got the news there was
another aftershock, thus increasing the number of victims,” said Jusuf Kalla. “Nobody
thinks that the catastrophe would be so great," said Najwa.

On the first day, Najwa reported the condition of Aceh which was destroyed by
telephone because all infrastructure was destroyed, including telecommunications.
Najwa criticized the handling of disasters by the government being late. Najwa reported
the news until she cried. “All shops, government were closed. In the streets, there are
still many people who look for their families or save themselves. I see the destruction of
Banda Aceh like a muddy and dirty. Not by a pile of garbage, but a pile of human
corpses. One of the biggest difficulties is the absence of transport trucks that can
evacuate corpses, victims or evacuate refugees.”

Every day many people came to ask for help. When Najwa was reporting,
suddenly a mother approached her. "Miss, my child survived. Yesterday I saw my child
when you were broadcasting on TV," said a mother. "Where is your child?" ask Najwa.
"In the refugee tent, yesterday it was on the news at 7 o'clock. Please find my child,
miss," said a mother. "Yes ma'am, I will find it," replied Najwa. Then, Najwa and the
team with all the limitations of playing a tape to see the broadcast to help a mother.
Finally, Najwa and the team found and escorted the mother to her children's refuge.

Finally all of Indonesia cried and joined in feeling the difficulties of the people of
Aceh. Then they raised funds to help the people affected by the tsunami. On the fifth
day Nana returned home with Jusuf Kalla. Jusuf Kalla praised Nana for being the first
reporter to report on the Aceh tsunami.

"Thank you, sir, for helping us give us a ride to Aceh, " said Najwa. "You're
welcome, you are the best at that time. You help and report news that makes all
Indonesians move to help," replied Jusuf Kalla. "There is nothing compared to Mr.
Jusuf Kalla, I only report. But Mr. Jusuf Kalla controlled the situation at that time," said
Najwa.

Natural disaster coverage trains Najwa to maintain a balance between being a

reporter and a human. On February 2, 2005, Najwa got the PWI Jaya Award because
of his report while in Aceh. Since then, Najwa became famous as a journalist and
presenter.
