1812 First textbook on psychiatry written in America by Benjamin rush, so
Benjamin rush called father of american psychiatry.
1860 First Florence nightingale nursing school open at st Thomas hospital in
London
1912 Schizophrenia term first time use by Swiss psychiatrist Eugene bleuler
Also pass indian lunacy act

1927 Introduce insulin shock treatment for schizophrenia

1938 First time ECT use for psychoses in Rome
1946 Based on bhore committee recommendation five mental hospital in
amriatsar, Hyderabad, Srinagar, Jamnagar and Delhi are established.
All india institute of mental health which currently known as national
institute of mental health and neurosciences (nimhans) Bangalore was
also eatablished.

1949 First time lithium was used for treatment of mania

1952 Introduce chlorpromazine which change the whole picture of mental
health care by a revolutionary change in to psychopharmacology
1956 One year post certificate course in psychiatric nursing started at
nimhans Bangalore
1963 Community mental health centre act pass.
Started 9 month in psychiatry course in psychiatry nursing for male
student in lieu of midwifery in tamilnadu state

1965 INC had made psychiatric nursing as a compulsory subject of BSc

nursing programme
1975 Psychiatric nursing become an elective subject in MSc nursing in RAK
college of nursing
1982 National mental health programme in india
1986 INC made psychiatric nursing as a part of gnm curriculum
1987 Indian mental health act passed
1990 School mental health programme by the involvement of anganwadis
1991 Indian society of psychiatric nurses formed at nimhans Bangalore
2001 The first draft of national mental health policy was prepared in late 2001
and come in to existence in 2003.
