Examination, July 2020

Programme: B.Tech: ADE Semester :V

Course Name: Vehicle Dynamics Max. Marks : 75
Course Code: ADEG 364/MEAD 3001 Attempt Duration : 24

Section – B (Attempt all the questions) (5 × 15 marks)

Q1 A light truck weighing 1650 kg, performing a full stop from 96.5 km/h on a level surface with a 15
brake application that develops a steady brake force of 910 kg. Determine the deceleration,
stopping distance, time to stop, energy dissipated and the brake horsepower at initial
application and averaged over the stop. Neglect rolling resistance force and take aerodynamic
drag factor as 0.00935.
Q2 A passenger car has a weight of 20.105 KN and a wheel base of 2.8 m.The weight distribution 15
on the front axle is 53.5% and that on the rear axle is 46.5% under static conditions.
(a) If the cornering stiffness of each of the front tyres is 38.92 KN/rad and that of rear
tyres is 38.25 KN/rad, determine the steady state handling behavior of the vehicle.
(b) If the front tyres are replaced with a pair of radial ply tyres each of which has a
cornering stiffness of 47.82 kN/rad and the rear tyres remain unchanged, determine
the steady state handling behavior of the vehicle.
Q3 A vehicle of total weight 49.05 KN is held at rest on a slope of 10o. It has a wheel base of 2.25 15
m and its centre of gravity is 1.0 m in front of the rear axle and 1.5 m above the ground level.
Find (a) What are the normal reactions at the wheels? (b) Assuming that sliding does not
occur first, what will be the angle of slope so that the vehicle will overturn? (c) Assuming all
the wheels are to be braked, what will be the angle of slope so that the vehicle will begin to
slide if the coefficient of adhesion between the tire and the ground is 0.35?
Q4 A huge machinery is mounted on a bed plate which is supported on four elastic members, 15
each having a stiffness of 3.92 x 106 N/m. The total mass to be supported is 1 ton. It is
estimated that the total damping force exerted on the system is 20% of the critical and is of
viscous nature. When the speed of rotation of the machine is 2000 rpm, the amplitude of
vertical motion of the bed plate is 0.06 mm, calculate the total maximum force transmitted
through each mounting to the foundation.
OR
A machine of mass 1 ton is acted upon by an external force of 2450 N at a frequency of 1500 15
rpm. To reduce the effects of vibration, isolator of rubber having a static deflection of 2 mm
under the machine load and an estimated ξ = 0.2 is used. Determine (i) the force transmitted
to the foundation (ii) the amplitude of vibration of machine (iii) the phase lag.
Q5. Write a report on recent advances in tyre technology (Min. 1000 words). 15
(The report will be checked for plagiarism so don’t just copy paste from web or fellow
students. Write everything in your own words)
