Freeform Poetry I

Elizabeth Perkins
For Professor Michaels

Our shadows stretch on the road we travel

As I walk with you through the setting sun
You wrap my hand in yours, making me wish for eternity
The joy of such impossibility brings tears into my eyes

Freezing winds as the atmosphere stiffens

Winter is right around the corner
And will cover the entire city
In a wide blanket akin to your embrace

Observing the snow falling from the sky

As we seek each other’s warmth
Times like those
Turn my body into joy personified
Some would say I am weak and I am spoiled
But the truth of the matter is I’m just in love
From the depths of my being

If I have you with me I have a suspicion

That no obstacle will look big or intimidating
So I make a silent with watching the city get covered in white
For this to last as long as it can

Cool breeze makes the windows rattle

Startling the night itself awake
It doesn’t matter the type of sadness that comes your way
I’ll transform it into a smile
White dust keeps falling from the sky
Right outside our window
It doesn’t know when to stop
Painting everything in its white hue
And that imagery manages to teach me something
How this impulsiveness I can’t control
To bring you joy and comfort
Is just love plain and simple

If you were to get lost in the dark

I wouldn’t mind becoming a star
Shining light into your path
Laughter and sadness inside of you
It doesn’t matter which it is
I’ll be with you through it

Observing the snow falling from the sky

As we seek each other’s warmth
Times like those
Turn my body into joy personified
Some would say I am weak and I am spoiled
But the truth of the matter is I’m just in love
From the depths of my being

The blindingly white snow

Piling up outside our warm home
Is painting a picture of our future
Might it stretch for as long as the snowy roads
