ABSTRACT

EFFECTS OF TEENAGE RELATIONSHIP TO THE ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED STUDENTS IN CABAUGAO
NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Ellie Evonne G., Silvania, Prado, Catherine A., Sajor, Lea M., Serrano, Jan Jhorex
C., Lived, Eisen T.,

This research entitled Effects of Teenage Relationship to the Academic

Performance of the Selected Students of Cabuago National High School, aims to know
the reasons why did the students enter into a relationship, the benefits of having a
relationship while studying either good or bad. And to determine if having or entering
into a relationship while studying will affect the student’s academic performance. This
study employed a mixed quantitative-qualitative research design. The quantitative design
that will be used is correlational. And in the qualitative research design, the researchers
employed a phenomenological design. The researchers constructed an open-ended and
close-ended interview questionnaire in the data gathering procedure. The participants of
the study were composed of thirty (30) selected students of Cabugao National High
School. Majority of the respondents answered “very strongly agree” that “they can easily
conceptualize or do something with the help of their partner”. However, they strongly
disagree “that sometimes they miss their classes because of hanging out with their
partner.” In general, the respondents agree on the positive effects of teenage relationship
to the academic performance wherein they have better grades when they have a
boyfriend/girlfriend. Furthermore, they hardly give attention to their partner sometimes
when they have some serious school works. The things that encouraged or motivated the
students to enter into a relationship are the need on love and belonging and friends
influence. The best things about in a relationship are having a buddy and an inspiration.
On worst thing about being in a relationship, their partners stress them and it is the reason
why they cannot concentrate to their studies. Others are unfaithful, pre-marital sex,
clinginess. The students entered into a relationship because the feeling they felt to each
other is mutual. They are following their heart, because it makes them happy. And most
importantly, the students entered into a relationship to have inspiration in everything they
do, not only their parents as their inspiration but also with their love ones. Being in a
relationship have good benefits on students’ academic performance. Based on their
xv

General Average in the first quarter SY 2017 - 2018 that researchers gathered, all of the
students have passed. The researchers recommend that the students who’s in a
relationship or have partner must help each other with their schools works to make their
works easier and faster and for them to have no reason why they can’t pass their projects
and other school stuffs. Parents should establish a stronger family relationship through
giving total focus to their child’s activities; being open- minded and have a wide
understanding on the changes and development that happens to their child. Teachers
should continue to use an activities/ strategies integrating teenage issues and concerns
that will improve students’ academic performance. School administration and teachers
should design a program that fully lead to student’s understanding of themselves like
seminars / workshop on Teenage relationship, early pregnancy, stress management, time
management, goal setting and the like.
