Some people complain that they have no free time

Discuss the reasons why they might say this and suggest how they could use their time better.

A. Introduction

I. Definition
Time is a very subjective concept. Some people understand how time works
depending on how they use it. If they think time is precious, they will appreciate and use it
wisely. Meanwhile, if anyone thinks time keeps coming back every day, they might just let it
slips away. Why some people complain that they do not have free time? Is there any solution
to this?

II. Situation
Homework, school activities, examinations, house chores, and many other activities
describe the typical life of students. They might get stressed while trying to hustle over so
many things. At the end of the day, the get too tired to take time off for hobby simply
because they complain of not having free time.

III. Question
What time is it? This question tells us that everything that we do relates to time. In
other words, everything has its time and place. However, as ideal as it sounds, people use
time differently. Some people can be productive and do everything that they like.
Meanwhile, there are some others who keep wondering why they never have free time.

IV. Saying/quotes
We always say time is gold. It shows how precious time is. If time is precious, why
people waste it? Everyone is blessed with 24 hours every day. However, some people
complain that they have no free time. How can this happen? Are they ways to solve this
problem?

B. Body
Reasons
I. Time is used for unimportant things
The real problem is not about not having free time but time is not spent well. This
situation happens when someone can be busy the whole day but important jobs are still not
done. He or she might spend time doing unimportant things and it takes so much energy. For
example, a student can get distracted while doing research online. Hours are spent on
watching videos aimlessly. Finally, when time runs out, looking for a free time is out of the
question.

II. Wasting time becomes bad habit

Free time never comes around because time is wasted and it becomes a bad habit. One
might ask, how time gets wasted? This can happen when a person feels too lazy to plan what
to do during free time. Therefore, instead of doing something productive during a free time,
time is spent on social media, gossiping, complaining or procrastinating. This leads to a
vicious cycle where free time is always wasted and misused.

III. Misunderstanding of free time – free time is for self-development

Free time might have different meaning to people. Free time for students in the
weekend to watch anime will be space to plan for charity works for NGO members. What is
the difference between these two activities? One is for leisure and the latter is to give back to
society. Both can still complain of not having free time depending on what each of them
wants free time to be. To misunderstand the definition of free time may create the illusion
that we never have time to do other things than work or study.

IV. Bad time management

Why is it that there is not enough time to do everything? We can easily feel
overwhelmed with tasks and duties and there is no time left to spend on ourselves. The root
of this problem is time management. We are not aware of how much time we have because
time is not planned properly. All of a sudden, we miss deadline, meetings and appointments.
We will always feel like life is a race against the clock.

v. Complaining
Complaining there is no free time will not only waste time but also it saps our energy.
When there are so many things to do but so little time will lead a person to think there is no
time to spend for leisure. In addition to that, negative thinking drains our energy because it

causes us to feel unmotivated and uninspired. Packed schedule, getting tired and complaining
make things even worse.

Solution
I. Use daily schedule – you know how much time you have
We do not know how much time we have unless we manage it properly. We need to
have time management system to put everything in place. Managing time will give us a sense
of control. Planning will be more efficient because we can estimate how much time we need.
There are many examples of time management system such as daily schedule, to do lists,
monthly planner. We can choose whichever suits our need and lifestyle.
II. Be more responsible with time – stop wasting time
The first step to have more productive time is stop wasting it. We need to be more
responsible to use time that contributes to our well-being. Spending time on Facebook to get
in touch with friends and family is a good thing. However, spending hours scrolling aimlessly
in a long run turns out to be time waster.
III. Understand what free time is – free time is for self-development
People define free time differently. Perhaps free time means going for vacation or
simply smelling roses in the garden. The bottom line is free time has potential for self-
development purpose. It is a popular belief that free time means to be away from works and
it is time to spoil ourselves doing mundane activities. Using free time to take up new hobby
can add values in our lives such as caring for others, or help saving the environment.
IV. Set priorities – first things first
Priority means to arrange things from the most important to the least important. We
should dedicate more time in doing things that are more important so that there is no guilty
feeling to spend time for leisure when we have free time. We can enjoy free time more
knowing that we have ticked the most important things to do off the list. In other words,
when you have several things to do for the week, think about first thing first.
V. Be more proactive – be part of the solution
To have free time is to make time for it. That means, we must be proactive in finding
the solution. To do this, we can start a weekly log to record how we spend time to see our
time spending habit. Having a collection of this record allows us to reflect on actions. It
helps us to make better decision on adding more beneficial activities and cut those that are
not contributing any positive result.
C. Conclusion
I. Prediction
As a conclusion, we are responsible to manage time properly so we can make full use
of the time whenever we are free. Time well spent makes life more meaningful. We can

accomplish a lot of things in less time. We can enjoy spending time with family and at the
same time feeling satisfied in our work life. Last but not least, we will stop complaining.

II. Call for action

Everyone can be benefited from learning how to manage time properly. It is essential
for parents to manage their time to balance between work and family. The same goes to
students who strive to be well rounded students. They can excel in many areas such as
academic, sports and talents. In general, the cumulative productive use of time will advance
a society in many aspects.
III. Question
As a conclusion, managing time gives a lot of benefits to anyone. We will be able to
do more with our jobs and enjoy free time soon after. It is fairly easy to solve time
management problem once we understand the causes. So, the next time anyone complains
about not having free time, do you think there are other reasons behind it?
