Career Research Worksheet
This worksheet is about the career field as a whole. For example, you are researching
“education” and not second grade science teacher.
Please add spacing to this document and type your answers under the questions below. Be sure to highlight your
answers in yellow so I can identify your information quickly.
1. What is your intended career? If you are not sure of a career right now, choose one of interest to
explore. I am not quite sure what career I want, but one career that I am interested in is Teaching.
2. Find a professional website for your career. You can find this on the OOH (Occupational Outlook
Handbook). Go to the “more info” tab and then click on the name of a professional website for that
career. The OOH is NOT the professional website for a specific career. Teacher.org
https://www.teacher.org/career/art-teacher/As a last resort, if you cannot find a professional website
on the OOH, you may find a professional website sometimes by using google. (Please show me first in
class if you had to use google.)
3. Using the OOH (“more info” tab), a professional website specific to your career, or the library
database, find one professional/academic journal (something that comes out periodically either in
print or web form) related to your career. What is the name of the journal?
https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/toc/esj/current
4. Field/discipline:
a. Identify the career field/discipline. For example, if the career is a teacher then the field
is education or if the career is mechanic then the field is automotive industry.
Field: Education
b. Identify a specific position or title in the field/discipline (for example, an elementary
school teacher or body work repair mechanic). Elementary school teacher
c. Identify two related positions in a similar or related field/discipline in which you may be
interested (for example, a day care worker and college instructor or machine repair and
certified dealer service manager). Social worker, day care worker.
5. Knowledge /Training:
a. List the minimum education required At least a bachelors degree.
b. List any required certifications or licenses. How often do you have to renew the
certification or license? How many hours of continuing education units (CEU) do you have
to obtain each year to keep that certification or license?
In order to teach you do need a certification or be licensed, and the type of license varies by
state.
c. List the majority of the skills needed to be successful in this job.
Communication, patience, physical stamina, resourcefulness.
d. How many years of experience are required to work in this career?
According to OOH you do not need any work experience, but it would be preferred.
6. Salary/Earnings:
a. List the hiring (starting) salary range. (Use current position listing or job boards.)
$48,516 when starting.
b. What is the average salary (not the highest) ?
Average wage is 55,800
I believe that these initials do match my career choice because some of the
characteristics that you need in that field are being creative, being a visionary, being
compassionate, and flexible.
b. Why is this career significant to you? Why did you choose to go into this career? What
inspired you? For now, I chose this career because I feel like I will be something that I will
enjoy doing and also because I want a career which will not take up too much time so I can
enjoy doing other things.
c. Describe how and why or why not this assignment altered or completely changed your
career path. This assignment did not change my career plan, but I am still trying to find
another career that I could enjoy doing, and I probably am going to change career paths.

Transferable Skills
As you begin your job search, it is important that you know your own qualifications. Over the years you
have developed many skills from coursework, extracurricular activities and your total life experiences.
If you have researched topics and written, and edited and presented papers for classes, you have used
skills which are not limited to any one academic discipline or knowledge area, but are transferable to
many occupations. A prospective employer expects you to be able to apply the skills you have learned
in college to the work environment.
Below is a list of five broad skill areas which are divided into more specific, skills. Rate the skills
indicating your ability in each area.
0 = no ability 2 = some ability
1 = enough ability to get by with help from others 3 = strong ability
I believe that a way I can develop my skills specially the ones I will be using in my career is by volunteering or participating
I have never had the experience or opportunity to write a cover letter but thanks to the video and
the article that I read about resumes and cover letters, I feel like I am able to write one more
proficiently when the time is presented. Some of the thing that I learned is that cover letters are
recommended meaning that you should always have one with your resume. The cover letter is
used to show things like who you are, your interest in the position, why you are fit for the
position. The cover letter should also always have your name, contact number and email. Also
always thank them for considering you. As for writing a resume, always include things
(acomplishments) that are recent. And also don’t over explain things , make it short but that gets
to the point since most don’t spend more than 15 seconds reviewing the resumes and cover
letters

Career Choice
Choosing the right career that fits you can be tricky specially for a college student
because you feel the pressure even more, or at least for me that is how it is. I am currently not
sure what career choice I want for sure but I do have some in mind. But when picking your
career there are some things that you have to take into consideration, for example your interest,
skills, weaknesses and strengths. All of these are the components that will help you choose the
career that fits for you. As for me I believe that these fit with one of my career choices, which is
Although I am not sure what career I want to be in, education is one of my choices and
it’s the one I will be focusing on in this paper. I would like to be a elementary school teacher,
and to teach either art class or math. The reason why I chose this career is because I do not mind
working with children, and by being a teacher I feel like I would help make an impact on their
lives and help them be better in any aspect. But also the reason why I am deciding to stick to this
career choice is because I have felt the pressure of finding the field that I want to work in. this
preasure has come from my parents, specially my father who is believes that it is important to
know for sure what you want to do for the rest of your life and to stick with it. But if I had to be
honest I would like to do something else and i am pretty sure that there is something else that I
would enjoy more but because of the pressure that they put on me, I have decided to stick with
education for now. Although this might not be my first choice it does match my DWYA results
In order to be a elementary school teacher you need to be certified on the state that you
want to teach in and depending on those states they ask for other certification and/ or licenses.
But before you get all of this. The minimum education that is required in the field is to have a
bachelor’s degree. Although it is always better to have more than they request. Some of the skills
that you must obtain to be in this field are to have good communication skills, patience, physical
stamina and to be resourceful. Although it is not required to be experienced to join the education
field, it is really important and recommended that you do. And one way that you can get
experience for it, is by getting an internship in the field. Which I hope I get to do so that I can see
if I would like to be in the field or not and what I should expect when I am in it.
I believe that a day in this career would be filled with working with children from ages
about 6-10, and you have to be able to keep peace in the classroom as well as being organized
and showing/ teaching the children new things. You will also have to be able to manage
whatever obstacle comes to you as best as you can. I think that what I would like the most is
interacting with the students and teaching them the new things. But I can’t think of something
that I would dislike. What I have planed in order to be in this career is to study at lonestar for at
least another semester or two and then transfer to either Texas State University or to the
University of North Texas and continue my education there and I hope to find in which field
In conclusion these are some of the reasons why I want to be in this career field
(education) and why I think I would be a good fit in the field. Although I do not have everything
figured out yet, I hope that along the process I learn new things and obtain the skills that I need
