Operations Circular No. 4 of 1995

Subject: Precautions to be taken during Simulated Engine Failure Exercise.

Simulated engine failure exercise is one of the exercises for which the pilots
have to be trained and prove their proficiency. The aircraft manufacturers lay down the
procedure of “engine out” training which is required to be followed. The Boeing Co. has
clarified that their Boeing 737 training syllabus includes a simulated engine failure
during take-off at V1 in the simulator only and not in flight. They have further clarified
that since the pilots are trained and evaluated for engine failure at V1 in the simulator,
the instructor normally simulates the engine failure for this maneouver on the down
wind leg. While simulated engine failure exercises should be given thoroughly in the
simulator, the manufacturer’s recommendations should be followed while giving such
exercises on aircraft to ensure safety of operations during training.

The instructors should thoroughly brief the trainee pilots about the correct
handling techniques before demonstrating simulated engine failure exercises. The
instructors should also take all necessary precautions, guard/block the appropriate
rudder control and give clear commands to the trainee pilots so as to obviate the
application of the wrong rudder control during such exercises.

All operators should amend their Training Manuals accordingly and ensure
that the above procedure is followed.
