RANJAN GOGOI

Ranjan Gogoi (18 November 1954) is nominated as the Indian Parliamentarian and Judge who
served as the 46th Chief Justice of India for 13 months between 2018 and 2019. He was the first
person from the NorthEast to adorn the top post in the judiciary.

He attended the Don Bosco school in Dibrugarh before moving to Delhi to complete pre-
university studies. Then he studied at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, graduating with honours in
history, before attending Delhi University, where he received a law degree.

To keep the wish of his father he also appeared for the UPSC examination and he also cracked it
but later he join advocacy by convincing his father.

He enrolled at the bar in 1978, and practiced at the Gauhati High Court, where he was made a
Permanent Judge on 28 February 2001. Later he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High
Court on 9 September 2010 where he became its Chief Justice on 12 February 2011. On 23 April
2012, he was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court and on 3 October 2018, he was appointed
as Chief Justice of India. He was also nominated as Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha by
president Ram Nath Kovind.

During his carrier as a judge he has also given so many significant verdict on Ayodhya dispute,
arbirtration and on on re-assessment of income of Amitabh Bachchan
