2F To be honest, I was furious!

Aims  To review and practise using comment adverbs and

extreme adjectives. To give students practice in talking about a
personal experience, using narrative tenses.
Time  20 minutes
Materials  1 handout for each student
• Give each student a handout and tell them to complete
task A. Check answers as a class.
Answer Key
Across
3 honest 5 unfortunately 9 foolishly
4 surprise 7 luckily 11 apparently
Down
1 surprisingly 3 hopefully 8 ideally
2 frankly 6 personally 10 obviously
• Tell students to complete task B. Check answers as a class,
ensuring accurate pronunciation of the adjectives. You
could also take this opportunity to elicit any other examples
of extreme adjectives that students can think of, e.g. filthy,
hideous, packed, spotless, starving, freezing, huge, tiny.
Answer Key
1 furious 5 astonished
2 hilarious 6 ridiculous
3 exhausted 7 delighted
4 gorgeous
• Tell students to select one of the situations from B which they
would like to talk about. You may choose to give them some
preparation time to plan what they are going to say and to
make a few notes for guidance. Students then take turns with
a partner to recount their experience. Encourage students
to give their partner some constructive feedback once they
have finished, e.g. did they use a range of narrative tenses,
did they include comment adverbs, did they speak clearly,
did they hesitate too much.
• As an extension task, to reinforce narrative tenses and practise
using comment adverbs, tell students to select another
situation from B and write a paragraph about their experience.
