COVID-19 and mental health: How is novel

coronavirus spread affecting our mental


health?
The spread of novel coronavirus is affecting everyone. You are being invited to participate in a
research study. Your valuable input will help in understanding how novel coronavirus spread is
affecting our mental health. Before you decide whether to participate, it is important for you to
understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the
following information carefully and feel free to ask us if you would like more information or if there
is anything that you do not understand. Please also feel free to discuss this with your friends,
relatives and GP if you wish. We would like to stress that you do not have to accept this invitation
and should only agree to take part if you want to.

What is the purpose of the study?


The purpose of the study is to understand how the novel coronavirus spread is affecting our
mental health. It might help in better interventions to minimize any adverse effect and to prepare
for future outbreaks.

Why have I been chosen to take part?


Your valuable input is crucial for the success of the study. You can also ask your family and
friends to participate in the study.

Do I have to take part?


The participation is voluntary, and participants are free to withdraw at any time without
explanation and without incurring a disadvantage.

How can I participate?


If you agree to participate, you need to respond to 24 questions which should not take more than
15 minutes to answer.

Are there any risks in taking part?


There is no or minimal risk as at any time if you feel any discomfort, you can withdraw without
explanation and without incurring a disadvantage.

Are there any benefits in taking part?


Yes! It will help in understanding how novel coronavirus spread is affecting our mental health.

Will my participation be kept confidential?


Yes! Only researchers will have access to your responses. No personal information is being
collected.
What will happen to the results of the study?
The results of the study will be published in a journal or conference article.

What will happen if I want to stop taking part?


You can withdraw at any time, without explanation. Results up to the period of withdrawal may be
used if you are happy for this to be done. Otherwise, you may request that they are destroyed,
and no further use is made of them.

1. The purpose of the survey is to understand how the novel coronavirus spread is affecting our
mental health 2. The information in the study provided by me is confidential.
3. Only the researcher may know who I am and may not disclose the information.
4. I may withdraw my participation at any stage of the survey if I wish.
5. The survey results may be shared at a high level and will not have any specific details of other
students.
6. All correspondence will be done via The University of Liverpool email facilities.
7. The researcher may keep the results confidential throughout the time that it is valid for
(maximum of 5 years).
