CHEG 201 Chemical Process Calculation

Exam #2 (set A)
January 30, 2019
Duration: 50 min

Question 1) Using the ideal gas law, calculate the number of moles of carbon dioxide gas in a
100 L container at 300 K and 2 atm. Describe the methods to calculate the number of moles
of carbon dioxide gas at high pressures where the ideal gas law is no longer valid.

Question 2) The vapor pressure of water can be estimated by log(𝑃) = 𝐴 − , where

P is the vapor pressure in bar, T is the temperature in K, A = 5.20389, B = 1733.926,

C = -39.485. Calculate the vapor pressure of water at 50oC.

Question 3) Vapor pressure data on benzene and toluene are given as follows:

Temperature (oC) vapor pressure (mm Hg)

benzene toluene
80 760 300
92 1078 432
100 1344 559
110.4 1748 760

(3.1) At 92oC, determine the pressure at which a liquid mixture of 50 mol% benzene and 50
mol% toluene starts boiling.

(3.2) At 100oC, determine the mole fraction of benzene in the first condensate that is formed
from a vapor mixture of 50 mol% benzene and 50 mol% toluene.

Question 4) 100 g moles/s of CO at 500oC is completely burned with 600 g moles/s of air
which is at 100oC. The standard enthalpy of formation of CO at 25oC is -110.52 kJ/mol and
that of CO2 is -393.51 kJ/mol.

(4.1) Calculate the standard reaction enthalpy of CO + 1/2O2 = CO2 at 25oC.

(4.2) Calculate the enthalpy of 100 g moles of CO at 500oC using the information that the
molar heat capacity of CO (𝐶 , ) can be represented by R × (3.367 + 0.557 × 10 𝑇 −
0.031 × 10 𝑇 ) where R is 8.314 J/(mol∙K) and T is the temperature in Kelvin.

Question 5) The partial pressure of the water vapor in an air at 50oC and 1 atm is 0.05 bar.
Determine the absolute humidity, relative humidity, and dew-point temperature of the air
using the Antoine equation in Question (2) and assuming that the air is composed of water
vapor, oxygen, and nitrogen only.
