Summary:
El Filibusterismo’s few main purposes were to to defend Filipino people from foreign
accusations of foolishness and lack of knowledge and to show how the Filipino people live
during Spanish colonial period and the cries and woes of his countrymen against. The novel
serves as an inspiration to the Filipino people. It brings a profound effect on Philippine society
in terms of views about national identity, the Catholic faith and its influence on Filipino’s
choice, and the government’s issues of corruption, abuse, and discrimination. El Filibusterismo
also pointed out the effect of colonization on people’s lives and the cause for independence.
The book awakened the Filipinos in the past and is still awakening the Filipinos of today to fight
for what is right. We may not always get our way but just like Rizal, we continue to fight as hard
as we can. Here, we researched about the different characters and how they symbolize the
people of today. From what we saw and learned on the internet, we can very much relate and
even see those characters in today’s time. The Filipinos, like how Rizal wanted, are strong and
independent people.
